Pawn Shop Sneaky Pete - Who made it?

I still think it looks like one of Jerry Oliver's cues and if it came from
New Mexico that's one one state over from him I belive. If I was you
I would call him.

I think that's a good idea. It's worth a shot anyway. Can't hurt to check.

Since Gunn has passed it is more difficult to check. But I did find out that somebody that knew him well trained in his shop and worked at his side. He might know. So I'll contact him about the possibility it might be a Gunn cue.

I'll be very surprised if I get anywhere, but I do enjoy chasing cue information so just trying is cool.

I don't think it was a casual hobbyist at this point. The cue is well made. Basic, but not "just" a sneaky conversion.

I did some searching and find resemblance to both Olivier and Gunn cues. In fact very similar to several Gunn conversions I saw on the web.

I am at the point now where I actually might like to see it refinished. I am looking at a cue lathe now. Met the guy, saw it. Perhaps if I get the lathe this will be my first refinish when I am done practicing on junk cues.

Maybe you'll get super lucky and it turn out to be and early sugartree,
I think New Mexico is where Eric Crisp is from.

Well, he started in Alaska.

If it were his I think it would be a very early one. The cue is nice, but not as nice as his currently known work. And it's a 3/8x10 pin.

Obviously that would be amazing. Can't hurt to check I guess.

These days I think we have to get away from thinking too much about regions. Cues move around too much now compared to the old days. Basic sneakies would perhaps move around less, but who knows?

I will keep poking around on this. I do love a mystery.

Yup, looks like a Wayne Gunn conversion. That cue could have been made anytime after after 1992~ish.

www.tampabilliards.com - get in touch with Terry. He'll know from looking at those pics.

I was just told it looks like an old Wayne Gunn conversion.

Any thoughts?

That would be cool.

I don't have my hopes up for anything on this cue except a decent player for a cheap price. I have no delusions about it.

Oh....and I just scratched the finish...right on the points...just now. MOTHER&^%#!!! I haven't dinged or scratched a cue in a lot of years! Oh well, at least it was a $20 cue and not a $1000 cue! LOL!

I think I would just call it a Chopdoc, and smile if it plays pretty good. ;)

I haven't checked on the Gunn possibility but I think it will likely it will be a "Chopdoc". :grin-square:

Cue plays nicely. May make it my "rough" bar cue.

I have a Sneaky with a couple of Scruggs shafts but I don't want to take that in the bars. And I have another that has a lot of sentimental value that prevents me from taking it in bars.

Looks like one of my cues that was done in the late 80tys with the old Brown phenolic and black fiber from Atlas .I did several like that before I moved on to other styles but all were great players. When I would go a vacation I always had cues to sell I would hit all the Bars & pool rooms this cue was most likely sold on a trip to Yellowstone Wy for $100.00

Cool!

Can we say you are "officially" claiming the work?

I think it's cool if I can say I have an Axe!

"Who made your cue?" "The Axeman."
