sold an item using eBay,
recieved this email from buyer:
Wondering when shipment will arrive?
It's plainly stated on the auction page by the tenth but did not receive today!

here's my reply:
the 10th??
i have no idea where that information is coming from?
i sold using ebay and shipped using the united states postal service.
i don't believe they're related?
you box went out priority mail flat rate.
the united states postal service tells me, "3 to 5 days, but not guaranteed"
if ebay is telling you the 10th, then ebay should be making the delivery.

am i wrong for what i said?,
why does ebay do this sort of thing and then allow a paypal dispute.
what i'm really asking is... WTF?? :(

Ebay are actually just trying to assist you by giving buyers a rough estimate of delivery. I wish they had this when I was selling on ebay a few years ago. I would be shipping upwards of 10-15 parcels a day and received a gazillion emails "when can I expect delivery" etc..

I always put extra time for prep 4-6 days on my auctions even if I will ship next day. That way Ebay estimated delivery time gets always beat by the post office.

EBay should get out of the shipping business and do whatever it is that they do best. I have no idea what that is but it isn't shipping.

What is it with their automated shipping quotes. I buy a ice fishing rod and check the shipping rates. $35. Well, with that rate I can buy two locally. A handful of fishing lures that can be sent in a photo mailer, 15 bucks. Seller gets back to me. 4 bucks. By that time, the auction is over. Thanks.

I always have to message the seller and ask for a more accurate quote to my Postal Code. They are so far out in left field it isn't funny.

They aren't doing anyone any favors but scaring potential customers away from the sellers.

Its become a serious hassle to bid on anything. I can't lay down a bid or do a Buy It Now without first sending a message to the seller and waiting for a reply. Sometimes I don't get one. I lose out, the seller loses out. Next thing is I see is that seller has the item relisted. Who pays for that crap.

Sounds like you don't sell and ship much. As a seller on ebay, I always tell a buyer when to expect a package. And if they don't receive the package on time, I will let the buyer know the package is late and I'll start an investigation with USPS. This past week I had two packages that were stuck in Philadelphia processioning center, but I got quick results by calling the USPS and started an investigation.

You always need to tell a buyer you are sorry and you will contact your postal service to find out where the problem is. Customers are not always patient. With all the liars on Ebay, I don't blame them.:frown:

Do you print your labels through Ebay or Paypal? If not...you should. You get a nice discount sort of.

Ebay does not figure out what an item cost to ship. It is the seller. If it is too much, it is because the seller added to the actual cost.

I both buy and sell on Ebay.
I am puzzled though, when a seller charges $18 for shipping and it comes in an envelope with a $1.45 postage sticker. Oh yes, when I'm sexually assaulted by shipping charges, I do leave the well deserved feedback.
I questioned some sellers and their reply was; "I charge for my gas to go to the Post Office, boxes, tape, magic markers and my time."
I like to reply to them:
"Take the item and insert it in the same place they did the probe for your colonoscopy."

If this ever happens again, send the seller a message and let them know you want a refund. If it is a good, honest seller, they will send you a refund.

If they don't, you can file a dispute and try and get a refund that way. No need to send your item back.

Sellers do not want negative feedbacks.

This^. The seller sets the shipping fee, these days a lot, and I mean a lot, of people add huge shipping fees to offset the lower price of the item. And, in reality, there ain't much you can do about it except refuse to bid on items with high shipping fees.

Edit: You can report them for over charging on shipping but whether Ebay will do anything is anybody's guess

auction ended 10/08/2013 @ 4pm , local usps office close @ 5pm.
i shipped package 8am, 10/09/2013.
nothing further. :angel2:

Shipping charges are disclosed in advance. There are no surprises. Calculate the total price of item and shipping, decide if it's a good deal, and buy it or don't buy it.

I have seen people piss and moan about high shipping charges, even when the total cost for the item was far less than from other sellers.

For example... for the SAME ITEM:

Seller A sells item for $5 plus $15 shipping, total $20
Seller B sells item for $20 plus $10 shipping, total $30

Some people will give seller A a hard time for the shipping cost. I find that attitude very cheap. Total price is really all that matters.

This is one reason when I sell on eBay that I like to just 'flat rate' my shipping charges. I tell them it'll be XX amount of money for shipping, no more, no less. Granted sometimes this can be extra money in my pocket, or extra money out of my pocket, depending on where it's going. But it sure does make life a lot easier.

eBay WILL however do it's little self calculation for buyers so they can see when it will be received. I "think" there may be an option to over ride that though in your user settings....not sure. I know I ship 90% of my eBay items by priority mail, however I have my account set up to use 'standard shipping' which gives me some extra time. Also make sure you have a good number in the 'work days to process' field. All those variables I think contribute to the date that eBay estimates your customer will receive their package by.
