Need to warn you guys about what I guess is the newest scam from the dirt bags out there. I got an email from Paypal today showing an item and an amount I had purchased using Paypal. The only problem was that I didn't buy anything! At the bottom of the page is a link where you can contest the buy. That of course is when the idiots who came up with this poor attempt to get your personal info, hope you will submit it thinking you are being ripped off. I sent it to spoof@paypal.com and they verified it wasn't from them. This is one I haven't seen before so just wanted you guys to know about it here. It definitely looks real on the surface so it will throw some people for sure.

I got the same one day before yesterday.

Mine arrived about a year ago. There is that one and there is one where they say your credit card is expiring and you need to update. (How they find that out is a mystery).

They *don't* know. That's the trick - they gamble on people's gullibility.

If you got one of those scams, and your card WAS expiring, it was most likely just a coincidence.

If you DO wonder if it's legit, then *never ever ever* click the link supplied - fire up a browser window, type in the URL that you *know* is legit for the institution in question, and handle things directly that way.

Both have been around for some time.

They send a million out and 1% actually respond.

there MIGHT also be one about "paypal purchases made through a foreign ip address", and that possibly your verification may have been compromised.

this one was easy because the "to:" was to several people besides me.

It was certainly not from Paypal. It was a forgery made to look as if it came from Paypal. On all such messages, simply look at all the email headers, and note which system the message originated on (usually this is obvious). That system is probably some poor idiot's PC that has a worm/trojan/virus running on it that is using it as a remailer. The poor idiot is probably wondering why his computer is slow and his internet connection is even slower.

If your mail reading program doesn't let you look at all the "headers," it is broken and you need to find a better one.

I get several such "spoof" messages per week. They appear to be from Paypal, eBay, and various banks. I send them to the appropriate "spoof" address.

This thread does not belong in this forum.

Yeah, I just got a "Your account is suspended" email. When I clicked on their link I saw the URL that came up and it DEFINITELY isn't Paypal.

Sorry. I don't go on the computer that often so I didn't realize this had been around for so long or I wouldn't have posted this message. It was sure new to me.

The thing to look for is https://www I was told to look for that from Paypal, the 's' stand for a secure site and that if it doesn't begin with www.paypal/ it's a scam/ phishing/ scumbag on the other end....I get the purchase verification scam every now and then...

I would not click on any links in suspect emails just to see. It could contain a keystroke virus or worm.

PAYPAL ALWAYS INCLUDES YOUR *REAL* NAME IN AN E-MAIL!

If you're E-mail is addressed as such;

"Hi, John Doe!" - then it might actually be Paypal (still, make sure)... if it doesn't have your REAL name, it's a fake, for SURE!
