I think you'd be MUCH better off buying a custom cue. You should be able to get a plain custom cue in the same price range as the cues listed above. There are hundreds of cuemakers in the US to choose from.

while, in general a good custom cue is better than a good production cue, but IMHO, I think schon cues hit nicer than a lot of custom cues. Out of the two I would say a schon, but I would say you must hit with the cue before you buy since feel is so subjective. I would find the local cue makers in your area and hit with thier cues. If you fall in love with one buy it....But I have hit with some customs that don't compare to my schon.

My custom cue by Phillippi hits way better than most Schon cues that I've tried and owned. Furthermore, I find the diameter of Schon butts too small for my extra large hands. And I don't use a wrap, either.

Phillippi is also a high end cue...

schon or pechauer???

I was also looking for a new cue and pechauer was high on my list. As a matter of fact, I got a chance to look at the one you are considering and I thought the workmanship was excellent. The schon cue also looked very good and the owner of the pro shop told me that schon is considered the top production cue maker.
I decided to go with a custom cue. As I wait for it to come, I keep agonizing over my decision. It seems hard for me to justify paying over twice the price of a production cue, as a player new to the game that always plays alone. Hopefully when it arrives it will exceed my expections for both quality and how it plays. Then I'll be happy....

I have the Pechauer P-14 and really like it, the only problem for me is that I have a long wing span and the stick is too short for me. You might ask Jerry if he can customize that a little for you, e.g., wrap, taper, tip, etc. I've never played with a schon before. A lot of people thought my Pechauer was a Schon until I told them it was a Pechauer.

All other things being equal, for what it's worth (and, you probably don't, and shouldn't care, but), the Schon may have an edge in name recognition.

I think if you did an equipment check on all of the various pro tours that are going on currently or over the last 10 years, between the two Schon would far surpass Pechauer in usage, if that means anything to you.

The finish quality of a schon and pechauer are reputed to be very similar. You can't compare the feel or hit of the two manufacturers directly, because they both have a broad range of cues which will hit differently simply because they're constructed differently. You just have to try them both, and decide.

Pechauer will make a full custom cue, or a customized version of a production cue. I've never seen a full custom schon, but I'm sure they'll make a custom cue for the right price, or for the right player. :) Schon generally does limited production runs of cues (unique, limited, elite lines), which is a good way to get a great production cue that 5 of your friends won't have an exact copy of. But you pay for that privalege.

You could give Pechauer a call, and they'll customize the P13 for you, and it probably wouldn't cost much more than the list price. Will take longer to order though.

I personally own a custom pechauer, so you can see my bias. :) I love the cue, and it has gotten alot of compliments on its looks. I've only let a couple people touch it, so I can't say that its gotten alot of compliments on how it hits. ;)

You should just try to play with both of the cues you're looking at, or at least cues that are by the same manufacturer and made using the same materials and technique. Then you can decide what you like best. Neither choice is bad in my opinion.

cheers,

Pechauer or Schon

Just because a cue is custom made doesn't mean it's a better cue. I've seen a lot of poorly made custom cues. What is custom? A cue maker that does all of his own work? A cue maker that oversees all of his employee's work? A cue maker that makes 100 cues a year doesn't necessarily put more care and effort into a cue. Thus quality doesn't depend whether it is custom or production but on the individual cue maker's or quality control itself. I know I may be offending some cuemakers out there but hey...it's reality. I can take a piece of wood, turn it into a cue, and call it custom made. It'll play like crap and I'll probably be able to shoot an arrow from it.

Pechauer or Schon, you decide it's all preference. They are both cues made by companies that produces a lot of cues each year which doesn't mean they play better or worse than custom cues.

i have had both schon and pechauer cues have played alot of games with each they are similar in hit butt diameter and overall feel. however i feel that the construction and finish on the pechauer are much better than any schon.i personally am playing with a ned morris custom cue which hits great but i am still gonna give it up when my new custom pechauer arrives because i feel the pechauerhits just as good for less money. also i feel qualified to give yhis opinion since i have been a dealer for easch cue maker for over ten years. nik

pechauer or schon

I play with one of Pechaur's entry models, and have used it for about 1 1/2 years now. It's been the best I've used, after jacking around w/ junk for most of my playing life. I ordered a Pechauer http://www.pechauer.com/prolimited/index.htm # PL08 about 5 weeks ago, and they were glad to add double rings at the joint, and also a black leather wrap. Even the logo of the pool hall I frequent will be on the butt cap.
I can't argue intelligently about the differences between these 2, but the dealer/owner I bought from hangs his hat (an understatement) on Pechaeur.

pechauer or schon

I could't argue intelligently on this, but the dealer / room owner I ordered my Pechauer from swears by the Pechaur quality. (I think he gets aroused when he's selling one to someone!) I recently ordered a PL 08 in the Pro Limited series, and Pechauer added double rings also at the joint, a black leather wrap, and even the logo of the pool hall I play at. It'll be here in a week, and I can't wait!

I vote for schon

Never tried a Pechauer, but FWIW I ordered a Schon from Evan (a C4) just before christmas and could not be happier with the service I got, especially being an overseas customer. The hit is great, the shafts came exactly as I asked (although I am still not sure about the stock tips), and the butt was beautiful.

If you order a Schon from the factory, you will get very good service.

As I said above, I have not had anything to do with Pechauer, so they could be equally as good.

I own a Pechauer and a Schon. The Pechauer pretty much stays in the case all the time. They both hit well and look fantastic but I prefer the Schon's hit and balance. Another item of note. I had bought a Predator shaft for the Schon when I bought the cue. I am one of those people who don't particularly care for the feel of the Predator shaft. I have a friend who loves them. He had bought a high end Jacoby in Reno last June and the Jacoby shaft will fit a Schon. I traded him the Predator shaft for the Jacoby shaft after he let me hit a few with the Jacoby on my Schon butt. I was amazed at the difference between the Jacoby shaft and the Schon shaft that came with the cue. Since then I ordered another Jacoby shaft for the cue and was told by the people at Jacoby that a lot of Schon owners are using Jacoby shafts on their cues. Has anyone else tried a Jacoby shaft on their Schon? I would be curious to hear what you have to say about it.
