Peculiar SPAM-ish goings-on...

This morning, for the first time, I checked out Corey Deuel's MySpace, and also the linked Cuetable site in order to watch the YouTube videos of his "Run a rack in the fewest number of shots" game. These links were posted in a thread here on AZB.

Awaiting me this afternoon in my Inbox was this piece of SPAM:

Subject:US players accepted
From:"Corey" <Yolandanjn@globenet.com.ph>
Date:Thu, 17 May 2007 02:30:35 -0800
To:<gloria67@sbcglobal.net>

Has anyone else ever received any Pool related SPAM after looking at these sites? I'd hate to think it came from some sort of "Bot" on either of the two sites I visited, but the timing is suspicious. (or an amazing coincidence)

It doesn't quite scream pool, tho it does have "corey" and "players" in it. As far as I know just visiting a site and viewing clips won't get you on someone spam list... you need to have filled in your real email address somewhere at some point. If you didn't then it might be existing spyware that checks the sites you visits, sends them back to the spammer, and then automatically fills in names and subject lines that relate to the places you've visited. I've never heard of that particular tactic but it's doable.

Thanks for the info - that's just about what I figured. I never enter any personal info in an untrusted site, and my email isn't handled by my browser, so it must have been a fluke. There was a news piece on TV this morning about malicious websites that can plant code on your machine "simply by visiting them", but further examination of this type of claim usually points to a heavily targeted piece of software, like M$IE and/or M$Outlook, (and generally not set up securely) neither of which I use. I imagine "no firewall" would also be a "requirement".

Is the email you got the spam at the same email you signed up for MySpace with?

MySpace is rife with people using it to try and do nasty things. There have been plenty of occurances in the past where someone posted up malicious code on their profile, hoping to catch victims as they look at the profile in question.

yeah, I gotta delete myspace spams every day, tho nothing in my mailbox. I keep a hotmail account strictly to sign up for stuff online and collect junkmail, and it works great.

The myspace spam is hilarious, it's either PMs with GET YOUR MACY'S GIFT CARD TODAY! or friend requests from bots that set up what looks like a real girl's site and she just happens to have a webcam... "and I can't post my modelling pics cuz of myspace's stupid nudity policy! So come check them out on my other site hotpreteennudelesbiangoatporn.com!"

Or a type of bot that infects email address books, if you are on a PC look for a free program to ck your system adware and spybot come to mind. Good Luck
