People doing Ring Games

Grady

Pro Player
I confess that I’m very disappointed that with the popularity and success of Ring Ten Ball,
I haven’t received even one day’s work. The concept of ring games wasn’t my creation but Greg Sullivan and I came up with a way to make it really shine. Now Charlie Williams and his UPA friends are advertising for sponsors for a Florida ring game. I just made a few phone calls to quality people and raised $60,000 for two ring games.
When several room owners and assorted folks asked me for everything I had on ring games I cheerfully and freely gave them all that I had. As I did this I would mention that I do awfully reasonable exhibitions and clinics and I could also take care of their particular ring game. Then, again, not a single day’s work. I don’t want to make a crusade or issue out of this. It just hurts that when my services and products are the best on the market I get overlooked.

Hi Grady. Unfortunately it inevitably happens. You have a great idea and someone learns how to profit from it. It happens to any creative thinker. The guy who invented television never got a dime of it while the Big financiers stole everything. I dont think I can feel emotions like "hurt" anymore. Business just doesnt give a damn about people and their feelings. After 50 some odd years I finally realize what my mother said that I didnt pay any attention too. She always said "Save your money!". For when you have that saved money you just dont give a damn what others do.

I hope you can take solace in the fact that people know you were behind the moving force behind the ring games as well as other great events that will go down in pool history. I hope you know that there are some of us who admire your perspicacity and tenacious attitude. You have done alot for Pool and its fans. But like a moody mistress that Pool is I dont think you can EXPECT Pool will do anything for you. Thanks Grady.

Why is it...?

Why is it that most people that contribute to pool the greatest, like you Grady, are sometimes respected the least? And often, treated the worst? I think it's a sad day for pool when the only time you hear about someone getting respect for being a contributor to the great game of pool is in an obituary. If I can help you out in any way, email me.

Keep swinging for the fences

Hell, don't worry about it Grady. Concentrate on making the Gulf Coast Classic a tremendous success that will grow and become as recognizable to the world of pool as Johnson City once was and Derby City is today. Anytime somebody makes a buck there is always someone that jumps on the idea and tries their hand. That is why you will see a gas station on each corner of an intersection. Just keep doing what you do best and it will all come together.

Grady, when my pal, the Pelican ask me who I thought would be a good instructor for him to go see, I told him, in my mind Grady Mathews was the only guy. I'm sure I am not the only opinion Pel got before comming to see you.

What does this tell ya? I think it tells ya you are more appreciated than you think. I don't own a room but I have been around the country and seen many great players and many different attitudes and if I did own a room, Grady Mathews would make many apperances at my place and assist in running the many Ring Games that I would have. No one on earth has the knowledge AND attitude to get the job done (with a smile on his face) as well as Grady. Best of luck to you my friend,,,,,,,,,,,,,$Bill
