hopefully someone could verify if the attached is pernambuco or not. or could someone help me identify what wood is this.

If you cut into it and its a rich deep orange I would suspect thats what it is. But the pernam that I have is darker on the outside. Looks more like catalpa a tulipwood knockoff but not as pink as tulipwood. That would be my guess.

Pernambuco

The outside color is on the orange side, the room lighting might give it an off color. Will post the photo later as i will drop by at the wood shop again.

Aside from the color, is there any other distinguishing characteristic?

Thanks for the help.

Try looking at the end grain photos on hobbit house Web site and comparing to what you have. He took an in depth look at a piece he suspected of being different than the pernambuco. Old violin bows were made from this, and highly prized. Perhaps research of those would help with color variations possible in the species. Also, the pernambuco apparently changes color in sunlight pretty quickly. Perhaps a test is in order if the deepening of color isnt an issue?

It is always hard to tell from photos, but it looks like it could be Jatoba to me. Does it smell a little like a dusty closet?

What makes you suspect it is Pernambuco?

Any chance it is more golden than orange?

Pernambuco

It was labelled as pernambuco. I have only seen one in photos, could not verify it properly as the end grains are not exposed properly.

It is on more on the orange side. The woodshop has day light lamps, have not seen it in natural light yet.

My pernambuco is very orange and plain. Coring dowels. I don't have much experience with it and wood can look oddly different in plank form compared to a to a round. Trusting the source/label is probably as a high a probability as someone making a positive ID from the pic.

The come in different shades.
Hard to tell.
They are relatively dense.
