Personal Music Devices

I like wearing it during a league match so you don't hear the "Nice shot" comments or giving the APA high 5's after every inning. Very annoying when you are trying to keep your head in the match. I think APA is hurting my game and this will be my last session.

What are your thoughts on people playing with MP3 players and headphones?

Beats the hell out of some music I can't stand blaring out of speakers 10 feet from my ears at an astonishing decibel level.
Why should I care if they listen to something in their headphones as long as it isn't coaching.

I dunno, I guess I'm one of those guys that likes to say something like

"Nice shot on that 5 ball" after the racks over and things like that.. Just seems so impersonal to have head phones on while playing somebody. To clarify though, just becuase I think it's rude, doesn't mean I won't play. ;)

I've also had a situation where I'm playing somebody and they are talking on their cell phone and putting it down in between shots.. I think that's rude as well.

I don't consider headphones rude, unless it is clearly a social occassion. However, I do consider carrying on a cellphone conversation bad etiquette as it interfers with the game.

Good soothing music to listen to when playing pool, at least it helps me: Pink Floyd, Engima, The Doors, Alan Parsons Project.

Headphones are not allowed during APA matches because they're afraid that someone will try to sneak in some coaching over the headphones.

I don't know if I would define those groups as "soothing music". lol.

I am not sure why, but I find it to be exceptionally irritating.. I've played a few people with mp3 players, and its irritating as hell to have to talk to them, only to have them give you a stupid look... Then wait for them to pause their music, pull out one of their ear phones (Becuase god knows what you have to say isn't important enough to hear it with both ears) only to give you a nod, and put their headphones back in..

Pool is suppose to be somewhat social isn't it?

I played Jaden from here once and he had one on.. Kinda irritating, but atleast he kept the volume low enough to know when someone was talking to him..

The last guy I played with I wanted to strangle him with the headphone chord. Doesn't much matter though I ended up robbing him anyways.

I won't acknowledge people when I am not wearing headphones, unless it is something said that is relative to the outcome. Not being rude, but I don't want you saying "nice shot". It insinuates you want me to compliment your shots. I only do that when the outcome of the game/match means absolutely nothing.

It is sort of like

someone coming over to your house to see you, and spending all but 2 minutes on their cellphone, it's rude, plain and simple. If they want to practice that way no problem, but if you are playing me in a tournament or for money, put it up.

Why would you care?

If the music isn't loud enough for you to hear, how does it affect your performance?

You wouldn't see players talking during a chess match.

I just got an i-pod and sometimes I use it during my 14.1 league play. A lot of times in the one league, we get surrounded by guys playing one pocket and banks and the woofing and howling by the players and railbirds is unreal. Before this, we would wear earplugs for when the volume went up.

In my other 14.1 league, I bring the i-pod and turn it on if the noise gets too loud or my opponent or the people on the next table are making too much noise.

I prefer to not use it, but sometimes I need to. I'll put on a little Beethoven, Debussy, Coltrane, Parker, something kind of soothing.

Last weekend, I was in a straight pool tournament that double booked for the day and we had a punk rock extravaganza that started midway through my second match. There was no way to drown out the noise and my 40-14 lead went south in a hurry.

I THINK THEY ARE TOTALY UNFAIR......!!

All of us practice playing pool...pool is about concentration and focusing on the shot..well it is part of the learning curve of shooting pool to deal with distractions...ignoring the loud music of the pool room ...ignoring people talking or someone trying to shark you..the sound of laughter in the pool room ..the distraction of some girl in a short dress (or guy..whatever trips your trigger) but the ipod takes away the need to learn how to mute things out....just plug in the headphones..put them in your ear and you only have to hear the sound of the music.. i dont like em ..i dont like em...they should not be allowed..

but just my 2cents

I use mine at tournaments, _between_ the matches. Only if my opponent is a total distraction will I pull it out for a match. I can think of one person I play who has me pulling out the iPod every time. Personally, I think it's a little rude to use one in a match, but I also think some people's behavior is rude, so sometimes it's neccessary.

I enjoy playing pool. I enjoy learning how to play better. I enjoy competing in a well-played match. I'm not gonna live forever, so I don't think I need to prolong the learning curve, by concentrating on ignoring low flying buzzards while shooting.

Personally I think anybody who has a problem with their opponent listening to an mp3 player with headphones needs to come up with some better excuses. I often carry my Ipod with me and put on my earphones during a tournament match. I have the volume at a reasonable level and I make myself available for my opponent to talk if needed. During a match I don't want to talk to my opponent and I find listening to music helps my concentration. I play in tournaments to win, not to socialize.

To me, pool is a sport, and not some social PTA event. Many professional sports athletes get in the zone before and during a game...does that make them rude people?

And to the person who said that MP3 players are unfair.....Nobody is stopping you from getting one yourself.

Hi Snapshot,

I don't see eye to eye with you I think. If I practice, as you said I can do as I wish. But I don't see why it should matter if I put in ear plugs or headphones to my opponent. If you and I are competing regardless the stakes, I find it rude and intolerable to have to listen to you (my opponent) while I'm trying to preform.

Now on the other hand, if you and I go out to shoot some pool and hang out and have fun. Well, then I think it is totaly rude, but once we decide we are playing a race or straights to a final 3 then we are competing, and if your going to chit chat with me while I'm competing your the one who is being rude, and I will put them on and tune you out.

LOL.. I don't need anyone to compliment me on my shots. :D I already know by the expressions on peoples faces if I put the "fear" in them or not. ;)

What I was saying was occasionally someone will either do something really amazing during a rack.. In which case after the rack was over I would simply say "Nice Shot on that ____ ball." Doesn't have to be some long drawn out conversation. On the same token if someone shits in a ball I would also say "Nice shot on that _____ ball." LOL..

If I'm just practicing with someone then damn straight I like to have a little chit chat. If I'm really bearing down on my practice and am trying to accomplish something that day (and not just stay in stroke) then I'll practice at home, or get a table by myself.

As far as MP3 players reducing distractions... They probably do reduce them quite a bit. I kind of have the same stand point of "Unfair" as the other guy did, but in a different light. To me I don't believe they are unfair becuase if some guy wants to be "rude" then that's his right. I can tell you though, that part of playing pool is learnin how to cope with distractions. Playing pool in a pool hall, there will always be something in your peripheral vision, and most the time in your normal vision. There will always be background noise that is distracting, and the smoking hot chick will always walk by as I'm shooting an 8 ball or a 9 ball. Learnin to tune that out is part of being a pool player. Using a mechanical aid to tune it out for you would ultimately make a weaker player in my opinion.

My opinions are just that, my opinions and they might be viewed as right, and they might be viewed as wrong, so with that being said I'm going to take my argument to the next level..

To me being a solid pool player isn't just about shooting balls in a hole with a stick. A good "player" has to know all aspects of the game, mental, physical, and metaphysical (for when you piss off the pool gods :D). A strong player should be able to match up with somebody, and if that somebody is talking while their shooting, "adapt and overcome." Whether that be by talking back, tuning it out, etc.. etc.. If someone is standing in their line of sight, again adapt and over come.

I've had guys try to shark me in money games by talking non stop about shots they missed, and how tough the outs are. You'll never see me get a bigger smile on my face then when somebody tries to do that kinda stuff. You can tell alot about their game, their mindset, and their mental state just by listening to their voice, the things they say etc.. It's almost like "tells" in poker if you know what I mean. On top of which, any person that's spent alot of time in pool halls should be able to talk with the best of them.

I pride myself on my pool etiquette. I never talk when someones shooting, I'm always out of the line of sight etc.. etc.. But if someone opens that door and tries to go down that road.. God help them becuase to me they just gave me another tool in the tool box, and myself I'm pretty imune to it.

Point in fact when I play at home, I usually have my g/f talking to me, or whomever I'm playing with talking at me. It teaches you how to play with those distractions. etc..

This is getting long winded, but I hope I got my feable point across. MP3 players suck. :D There is a mental aspect to the game, and to tune it out, or ignore it will yield less results in the long run. (IMO)

i use my mp3 player, but only when it is my turn at the table.I find that it alaws me to get in a rythem and I play alot better.I do not make the person I am playing try and talk over my music,I think that would be disrespecable.I also some times wear ear plugs when I play.

OKay..im gona stick my neck out on this one and i know im gona get flamed and hammered on this one but this is how serious I am on not allowing ipods...if all of you who find that using an ipod is okay to help you concentrate..then none of you should have a problem with someone using a tip with the laser in the center to help your opponent with aiming...how is it diffrent ?...your using a device to help improve your game during a match..why cant they use a device to help them.. this is the reason why i have so much problems with the ipod...when i am home a my own table practicing i play the same song over and over again when i play...it is the song with the course line "We can drive home with one head light" so that when i play in a match...in my head i hear the song and over and over and i concentrate during the match like i do during practice..i even find my self singing in the song low while im shooting ...this is my own method and i have found that it has given me about 2 to three more balls in my run out ability...but think about the ipod as a device during play...
