Pet peeves with the forum

Hi,

There are a few technical things going on with the board that are annoying me very slightly. First off, no matter how big i set the windows window I always get a scrollbar at the bottom that I can move right about a millimeter, nothing big but I could be seeing another thread there instead of having to scroll down for it. Second is that lately there seems to be something wrong with the number of views a thread receives, only the people that replie seem to be added. Maybe these are easily resolved, maybe not, I don't know. Maybe someone with a bit more technical knowledge can shed some light on it.

But you know compared to any other forums I frequent it is so much better. I esp love that I can just roll over a post and read what it is about with out having to open it...
This is one of the reasons I do not frequent the CCB board any more, that and that the topics are just not that interesting to me...

Though it would be be nice when people post pics if they resized them small enough...;)

We all have our pet peeves, but my personal main one is the lack of a dedicated Board Information forum, ideally with sub-forums for News, User Information (Primarily to post when people are banned and why), Tech Support and a Suggestions forum for changes and feature requests.

This would mean we would not need to have the other forums cluttered up with this kind of post. I have suggested this in the past, it would be great to see it come to pass one of these days.
 
They need OFFICIAL threads bad!!! I suggested it once but it didn't catch on. To many redundant threads. For instance if they had an official complaints thread then all complaints would go there instead of a new title for each one and pushing the other threads off of the first page.
Like an official shot thread. Anyone that has a question or diagram of a shot could post it there instead of making a new one all the time and, you guessed it, pushing other threads off of the first page. I started an official cut shot thread where anyone with a question or comment about cut shots could post it in there but the next day it was pushed down the line and never seen again. They could have an official aiming thread and so on and so on....BUT I have gotten used to it this way. I think there are just to many people that post at all times of the day that would make it tuff to do.
 
My only pet peeve is that in the time it took me to read Double-Dave's paragraph, AZB logged me off. Sometimes it logs me off faster than other times. Then, I wind up having to re-log in again only to have new threads show up as if I had already read them.

There should be a box you can click that will keep you logged in?

How about it gets where there are so many complaints that people stop going to the complaints page? It's like ad-placement. If you have a whole section just for ads, few people look at the ads, they simply avoid the section. For ads to be effective, generally they must be forced on people. And complaints are advertisements, aren't they? I mean, what good is a complaint if nobody hears it? It seems that complaints lose their power where they're bundled up in a complaints box. Yes, it seems complaints carry more weight when forced into the spur of the moment.

I understand your suggestion, but I see the humor in it, how eventually the complaints section would be so over-crowded that sub-indexes would be required. Like for instance, first you go to "Complaints". Then you get a complaints index, from A to Z. Eventually you are able to find the actual complaint and it winds up being sub-indexed by gender, age, degree of importance, etc. I love complaining. I'm so addicted to complaining that I complain even when I have nothing to complain about. Imagine standing for hours with a pencil in your hand next to a complaints box wondering what to write down, and finally you put down, "Nothing for now, Goddammit!", as you walk away seething in frustration.

My only complaint is that this board is so popular and there are so many posters now, you post something on a thread and that thread goes to the second page in a very short time. I don't really know what could be done about it. The solution would probably be more problematic than just leaving it the way it is.
 
Larger number of posters.

I think this is a good thing having more and more posters on AZBilliards. In order to keep topics from zooming to 4 pages back so soon one suggestion to the moderaters is to simply add more categories. Some of the current categories are so broad that they cannot accomodate all the posts.

Some suggestions for categories and subcategories

Favorite TV Shows
Current Movie reviews/ comments
Professional Sports (non -pool)
Ebay Links (cues for sale by AZ members or warning threads)
Shameless self promotions (for promoting your local business)
Political Issues
Current Events (non political)
Anecdotes
Jokes
Interesting Internet Websites found
Legal discussions
Billiard Parlor owners/ employees discussion
[I almost forgot the best one! a thread just for POLLS!]

Having more categories would mean if you post a somewhat normal topic it wont get pushed back 7 pages in two hours if two people are having a contest on who hates George Bush the most.

Just a suggestion...:)

A lot of people also complain when there are too many sub-forums. Personally, the number of sub-forums doesn't bother me because you can always click on the 'new' button at the top.

I am working on some changes to the forums at the moment and I am more than willing to add some additional subforums if the users think they will be used.

What does everyone think?

I just cant stand thread titles like 'Did you ever?', 'What if
?' 'Something to think about' 'interesting story' etc. In fact ive neen thinking about giving bad rep to anyone who posts a thread title with no hint to its content.

Worse yet the Sticky situation. Some of the decisions made in this area have been truly baffling. Baby Shower sticky in the Pool Related section no problem and then debate as to the validity of of the Cue Table sticky where people's screens are freezing viewing those (Cue Table) threads?

I agree with this also we have those who's the best or who's the best ever at anything. These are opinions of people and usually do nothing but start arguments. They are so redundant that it's pitifull. If you do a search you find these constantly. I never looked but they are probably by the same people.
 
One time I was having trouble viewing the pics people post (i love alliteration). Then I couldn't see anyone's avatars. Another time I just couldn't seem to get the Quote and Reply buttons to work from my office computer so I posted a cry for help from my home computer but I didn't get any reply. Later, I tried turning off my Zone Alarm firewall and everything worked fine!!!! The problem wasn't with AZB at all!

I have no further complaints. Good job, Mike!

Personally I think the number of forums is adequate. I also think this forum is pretty good the way it is now. If I think real hard I can probably come up with a complaint, but nothing obvious. No matter how how hard you try, you will never produce a user interface (graphical or otherwise) which please all users, but I think if a GUI lab were to run a bunch of usability tests on AZB, they wouldn't find a whole lot of things to change.
 
I would like to see a Members Announcements subforum for birthdays, births, deaths, anniversaries, engagements, your dog had puppies, et cetera.

I don't care to read nonsense posts like hottest male or female player in the Main Forum; this has nothing to do with pool. We all have our favs anyway (*cough*Sarah Ellerby*cough*). See poll subforum suggestion below.

In the NPR section, there could be a current events and political subforum for those who want to discuss or debate on those topics, and it could probably use a joke subforum. And since polls seem to be so popular lately, a daily poll subforum. The polls lately (Coke vs Pepsi, boxers vs briefs, et cetera) have all been fun to read, but obviously not everyone thinks so.

Marissa, you're probably right, but how does this get controlled in an automated fashion. The mods could spend the whole day policing those kinds of threads manually.

I know... I don't know how they do it now. It's sad that the younger people on here act more civilised than the "adults".

Hmmm, let's make that some of the younger people. I think the bad behaviour runs the gamut of ages.
