Phenolic ferrule / tip

Hi, I have started making phenolic ferrule/tips using the black linen phenolic rod from Atlas. First question - should I be using the canvas instead? My first attempt taught me to round the edges to avoid chipping. On my third unit, I decided to drill a 1/16" hole to provide glue relief (I use 5 minute epoxy to secure the unit). Unfortunately, that unit shattered. Did the hole cause structural failure, or, is it just the wrong material? Thanks for any help offered, I REALLY appreciate the information and knowledge shared on this site, it has HELPED me ALOT.

I've never had one shatter and I drill a glue relief hole. after gluing on ferrule and getting ready to shape I take leather shavings from tips I've installed and force them into the relief hole with a little super glue gel. This should make the tip conform to some governing bodies rule that there must be leather in the tip.

Mike, are those White Diamond tips really that good? Are they hard to keep on a ferrule?

Sledgehammer has the patent for the one piece canvas phenolic tip/ferrule.

I could be wrong but I read somewhere that his patent does not cover phenolic in the harness that is commercially available. I also read he was trying to add that material to the patent now.
I don't know this for a fact, just read it here reciently. Chris.

Where can I buy the white diamond tips?
Just make your own from Aegis rod stock. Actually the Ivorine 4 may work better. Its also best if you make the tip with a tenon...then slip the tenon into the ferrule. That way they will NOT ever come off. I was using the white tips made from Aegis back in '99...then Janis outlawed them in his events.;)

Yes, the phen rod from Atlas will break...and often. Thats why Fury quit using the phen and are now trying a carbon fiber.
Go with the canvas...its 50x stronger. I have yet to see a single one have an issue. No glue relief hole is needed...don't put a ton of epoxy in the hole either...just lightly coat the tenon & hole. If your ferrule/tip is 1" then bore/drill a 1/2" hole...then tap 5/16-18 and thread onto a 5/16-18 tenon thats slightly shorter than your 1/2" hole. I've done 100's...yet to have a problem.;) The only problem is if you bore/drill too deep and fail to leave the cap thick enough.

I have a question... Phenolics have been banned from some tournaments which lead me to conclude that the White Diamonds are in the same boat because they are not leather. I have just installed a tiger J/B tip on my cue and it doesn't even compare to the jumping action I get from a phenolic. Are there leather tips that equal or at least come close to Phenolics and White Diamonds?

Don't know if it helps but this is from the site.
The White Diamond is not harmful to balls or equipment, and meets B.C.A. requirements for competition.
