phenolic tip maintainance

i just bought a j&j jump/braek cue with a phenolic one piece ferrule and was wondering is ther anything i should do to keep it working well:p

get yourself a really heavy grit sand paper where it looks like little rocks on it.. lol.. no really.. i think the piece i used to use on my sledgehammer is 60 grit.. and then place the piece of sand paper over the tip and press down with your index finger and scuff it in one direction.. keep doing that till you made it all the way around the tip and it will hold chalk great.. dont do anything to the sides of the tip..just the top..

Yes, heres a thought. Every question you have asked and disregarded peoples answers to, have been asked and answered before. Search for the answers you seek instead of expecting people to spoon feed you.
Chuck > normally wouldnt care but this is out of hand....

Ditto....most of the threads that you have started are common questions that have been asked who know how many times. Not trying to be rude, but the search feature goes a long way. Good luck.
 
Anytime I have used a break cue with a phenolic tip, I never scuff up the tip.

Some people do, some dont. I find it holds chalk well enough without scuffing the tip.

im not disregaurding the guys answer i just wanted to know other opinons before i took sand paper to the tip of my new cue:o
 
Scuff or no scuff, as long as you chalk the tip very well before each break (or jump) then there should be no problem. The reason for the scuffing with sand paper is to create little grooves for the chalk to sit (because phenolic doesn't hold chalk as well as the conventional leather tips). No harm either way as long as you are careful not the scratch the ferrule with the sandpaper (if you decide to use the sandpaper).

exactly what he said.... you dont need to go hog wild with the sand paper.. just enough to give it alittle texture to hold the chalk... you will find yourself doing this every couple of days because it will break much better with more chalk on it then hardly any.. hardly any could cause a miscue and a bad break..

My local cue maker uses a tool on his lathe to cut out little concentric rings in the tip. This helps it hold chalk as well. Don't suggest you try it at home (unless you too have a lathe, which I am guessing you don't).
 
I concurr with ChrisOnline. All you want is a texture on the surface, for the chalk to adhere to.

You can do that yourself. It works great.
