Phenolic Tip vs Leather tip

I've been seeing break cues with phenolic tips on them and I was wondering
if you could use them as a playing tip. To me this would be a great asset. Tips would last almost forever and no mushrooming. But I'm consurned about miscueing and maybe not getting the english that I want.

If anyone has some thoughts on this subject please feel free to chime in.

Your right, much harder to get english with certain non leather hard tips, especially phenolic. Playing with them is not recommended.

If you mainly stay in the center I don't think it would matter. I've also been able to put close to maximum english on the cueball with the tip that Andy Gilbert put on my j/b cue (executed Robert Byrne's power draw from 10 shots).

That being said, I don't think I'd ever have the confidence in the tip that I have with leather thus making stroke shots harder due to second-guessing yourself. I would reccommend getting a Talisman Hard or similar as they last a long time and tend to not move much at all.

I tried it. Tough to put draw juice on cb. Honestly though I don't know if the phenolic tip is to slick or I was worried about miscueing so I didn't stroke well. I stay with the leather for playing.

Personally I wouldn't be able to stand the sound that you get from the phenolic tip after every shot. It would drive me totally bananas.

ugh, ever since this thread was started I've been hearing all the possible sounds that can come from a phenolic tip go through my head.

TINK
TICK
CLICK

The only time it sounds good is at breaking speed, then it's a very satisfying THWACK!!!!!!!!!!!

Does this thread look like a joke? I'm just asking for peoples opinion. Ive never tried it myself, and was wondering if someone had and if it worked out good.

The Phenolic tip does not give the same feedback, hit, or feel that a leather tip does. It also does not hold chalk very well, and you would likely suffer from a ton of miscues.

Phenolic tips are best used as a break tip for power breaking.

Here's my experience. I have a table at home and when I practice, I break with my phenolic tip break cue, and shoot with one of my various other leather tip cues. But sometimes I forget (after the break) that I still have the phenolic in my hands and I'll proceed to shoot with it.

With that said, I've found that trying to shoot with a phenolic tip cue (other than breaking with it) is a good way to get use to chalking up after every shot. Because if you chalk a phenolic really good you can execute some english, but once the chalk is gone "FORGET IT"! So if you want to really see what happens when you don't chalk up after every shot, then try shooting with a phenolic tip.

So personally I would only use a phenolic tip cue for breaking, because when you miscue with a phenolic tip cue, you'll really miscue BAD. And if you're like me (a guy who forgets to chalk up after every shot), and if you try shooting with a phenolic cue, you'll miscue after almost every other shot (and that's a fact), whereas a leather tip will hold chalk longer and you can get away with not chalking up as much.

I tried it.

I tried it with my Fury JBBS. I didn't work. It doesn't hold chalk well, so I got a ton of miscues. It's great to even the odds if you're playing your non-pool shooting girlfriend a social game.

stop the madness

ok. let me put an end to this. Unless you are talking about breaking or some kind of proposition game, the thought of playing with a phenolic tip is absolutely absurd. I have a feeling that the starter of this thread posted it and is now laughing at all of the replies actually entertaining this idea. Please stop the madness. Why can't I run across a guy who wants to bet something and play with a phenolic tip? that would be a dream

I have tried shooting with a phenolic tip before and have actually run a 3 pack of 9 ball with it. HOWEVER, I do recommend strongly against it. On my 4 rack I tried to play a full table draw shot because I was getting a little too confident in the abilities of it to hold chalk and sure enough whitey went flying in the air. Luckily no one was in it's flight path and no one was hurt. Although it is an appealing thought of not having to ever replace a tip; it may not be a reality. I have heard a lot of good things about White Diamond tips where there are less miscues. I am thinking of getting a few and trying them out as well.

I use the white diamond tips on my jump cue and my break cue. I highly recommend them. I have NEVER had a miscue jumping or breaking but I am also not trying to put english on the cue ball. Well when jumping I sometimes put some back spin on it but that is it. Good luck and I am sure you will like them.

Sounds like

a new type of spot for someone. Make that better player play with his phenolic tip for EVERY SHOT, while you get to use any tip you want.

Might prove to be interesting. Of course, if he is a good gambler, he will probably want 2-1 on the money ... lol

Not sure exactly what kind of tip i got on my Andy Gilbert, as it was on there already when I bought it second-hand recently (I'm pretty its black phenolic -- otherwise, something real close to it). In all honesty, I actually used it one night when I was pissed at my crappy tip on my then McDermott playing cue...

Not too shabby! Lol. It actually inspired me to make the move to a harder tip...I actually liked it!

I will say that maybe phenolic is a TAD too hard, and prone to miscues...but why not just go with a hard leather tip on a break/jump/play cue if that's what you're looking for? Sumos, WBs, or Moori Quicks (he has those Moori Powers now? Not sure what's up with those)...all good.

Eh...I dunno...

I knew a few guys who can run racks consistently with their Sledgehammers...LOL

Makes me want to duck my head while I'm over here miscuing with mine on a break from time to time...
:o

No phenolic for playing

If you are worried about your tip mushrooming, just try a layered water buffalo tip. They break just as hard as phenolic, hold chalk and can be played with if you like hard tips.

I've had problems with miscues when using a phenolic tip. It may only be one miscue a week, but that is once too often for me!
