Seems to me I remember a couple of years ago a lot of talk about phenolic tips being banned on break cues. Is this still the case? i know a lot of them are still out there, just curious.

The BCA banned them, but has since lifted the ban, I believe. They are still legal in TAP, APA, and NAPA leagues.

Get a Samsara J/B tip and you won't have to worry if they are banned and take my word for it you won't be sorry. I put one on my break cue and it works better than the phenolic ferrule tip combo I had by a long shot.

This, exactly this. Since I made the jump to a Samsara I have not been happier. I wish I didn't wait so long to make that switch.

The phenolic tip ban the BCAPL instituted several years ago has been lifted...so as far as I know, they are legal to use by any major sanctioning body/league system out there.

I have both phenolic-tipped and Samsara-tipped break/jump break cues and I too find the Samsara to be the best choice for break power w/control over the phenolic tip/ferrule combos...which I find to have a smidgen more power.

I let one of my 9 Ball team members break with my J/B cue with the Samsara tip on it last Monday in his match. He'd been complaining about his break and he thought he needed to buy a new break cue, but after he broke a few racks with my J/B cue he told me was going to get a Samsara tip put on his break cue as soon as he could. He said it felt so much better than what he'd been breaking with that he couldn't wait to change his cue to the Samsara tip.

+1 on the Samsara, can actually get a bit of control on the cue ball when breaking. One of the easiest tip choices I ever made.
