Tip

I break with a Jerico Stinger which comes equiped with a canvas/resin composite tip. It took a little getting used to, but cue ball control isn't too much of an issue. People who aren't familiar with it are more likely to sent the CB off the table, as it really takes top spin.
I found that if I hit more to the center ball I have better control with it and a nice spread on the break.

I guess i vote phenolic, because it isn't leather

Canvas resin composite tip is one of the 3 types of phenolic tips, and the hardest of the 3 at 39,000 psi.

G10 and the white diamond are not leather, different materials.

All the info that I can find say they are leather, where can I find out more?

G-10 is glass woven fabric mixed with epoxy resin, very hard.

I like phenolics for jumping but breaking I like a hard leather such as a xtra hard talisman or WB or Sumo, The phenolics are hard on table cloth and balls.

I'm also using a White Diamond. The last few days I'm training to use a draw-break. Get a nice break and draw the CB back in the kitchen.

It is rumored that G-10 has damaged balls and I can believe it.

IMO the Tiger leather break tip and the White Diamond are the best out at this time for all aspects of the break game. The White Diamond is an excellent jump tip as well. In fact, that's what it does best!

Don't we all want to kill the object balls?

Is it harder than the phenolic tip on the Sledgehammer? I would like to experiment with the G-10. Where could I get one to have mounted on an idle shaft I have laying around?

If you look in some industrial supply catalogs (MSC or McMaster-Carr)
under garolite you will find that paper, linen and canvas phenolic is in the same family as g-10
Rockwell hardness for the phenolics are 100-105,G-10 is 110-115
Here are some I made up for different shafts I have laying around

I have Sledgehammers but I'm back to using my old Falcon j/b with an x hard Talisman leather tip.

I prefer extra-hard leather tips (Pressed Ingot, WB, Sumo, etc.) for my Break Cues. The only non-leather tip I have is on my DeepImpact Shaft for the Mezz PowerBreak, which has a Sonic Tip.

I prefer Canvass Phenolic Tip-Ferrule-In-One (as posted by chuckpilegis) for my Jumper that Dave from Albrecht Custom Cues made for me. My other Jumper, an AirShooter has a Black Ingot Tip (Black Linen based).

Both is mega ideal.

I keep two BK2 shafts in the bag, one with hard Tiger leather tip, the other phenolic.

Generally, I like phenolic for straight on center ball break and squat. The leather tip works well for me on those power english 2nd ball eightball breaks. Sometimes, for whatever reason, one might not be getting it done so I'll switch to the other no matter what kind of break.

Really wouldn't want to have to choose one over the other for all breaks.

Does that settle everything? :D

I used a Jacoby Break cue for a while

It is an excellent design of laminated butt and shaft and it has the phenolic tip with regular ferrule as not to go against gullassey (sp) patent.

It is a perfect 18 oz however because my stroke was not perfectly level at point of contact I was jumping the cue ball off the table. I learned to slow my break down to a point that I did not jump the ball but lost the effect of pocketing balls on the break. I also have been to pool halls which do not allow use of any phenolic tips. I have now returned to using a Josey cue to break with with better results for my game.

The phenolic is too hard for me to control.

Maybe this is a good reason to use a phenolic - it will force you to straighten out your break stroke. After that you can go to whatever tip you like best, but you'll probably stick with a phenolic (if you can stand the sound).
