Philipino women players?

With there being such a wealth of fantastic male players coming from the Philipines, why haven't there been any great female players from there? Is it that they are not given the chance due to gender? In some countries, women are held to a different set of rules than the men are. Is it because they are not given the instruction from the men? Just curious.

It's only a matter of time I think.
Great female bowlers have come from there.

Could it be that we (USA) are not the only country that treats their women this way? :p ;)

Filipina Players

I think the main reason you don't see them here is that they don't have the backing that the men players have. Mr. Puyat has been very generous in sponsoring some of the men but only Linds and Edwin Reyes, that I know of, have done much for the ladies. Another thing is the Visa situation. It's nearly impossible for a young Filipina lady to get a tourist visa to the US! I know, It took me nearly 4 years to get my Filipina wife here.

I'm attaching a pic of myself and Irish Raniola (hope I got the spelling right!) at a ladies tournament in Manila in 2003. This tournament was put on by a couple of AZ memebers, Edwin Reyes (bandito) and Linds . The tables used were made by Linds as well! If Irish ever comes to the US, these girls are in for shock!

That's news to me, coming from the spiritual home of great bowlers. I've never seen a single female wearing one.

She looks real nice. Just my type in fact. I've always been a sucker for tall mustachioed women in baseball caps and glasses.

Women don't play half as much pool as men in the Philippines... I mean you can see pool halls everywhere... but men play more than 90% of the time.. I still think that majority of Filipinos regards pool as gambling rather than sports.. and they feel like its taboo for girls to play pool in a local pool-hall... that's just my observation... I don't think Philippines has many talents among women pool players.... on the other hand.. i don't think the Philippines will run out of supply of great men pool players....

Filipina Players

My wife is a Filipina player, and is a listed money winner on the AZ Player List. Despite being Filipina, she has the same problems every other female player has that lives in Georgia and Alabama, THERE IS NO LADIES TOUR HERE (sorry, did I yell?). (The SEAL Tour appears to be DEAD).

As for more lady players from the PI, all of the above comments are correct to an extent. The PI is a male dominated society, despite having a female president. Most of the pool tables are in bars (like here), and many of the young ladies that can afford a hobby like pool, would not venture into the establishments that have decent competition. Of course, some of the ladies do venture into bars, and in my experience, that is where you will find some of the better lady pool players in the PI.

My wife (by the way) learned to play from me, when she arrived in the U.S. four years ago. She is now the highest ranked player on her coed APA Team. I do believe the Filipino(a)s have a natural knack for the game. But the ones that really do well are the ones that love the game and work hard at it. Filipino(a)s are a hard working and proud people. They also have a strong and talented tradition in boxing and other sports. I look forward to seeing Filipinas playing pool at the international level, so I hope your observations are correct. Paalam!

Can u put her another ladies tour ? or play in a open mens like the southeasten tour???

What Other Ladies Tour?

Well, we are driving down to Florida for a qualifier with the Spirit Tour, but the Spirit, Fury, and all Ladies Tours are a minimal 8 hour drive from Alabama, and the girls in Atlanta are not much closer. This is hard to believe, as I know there are a lot of talented lady pool players in Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee, that have no Tour at all. The SEAL Website has had the same message on their website for about seven months now. I think when Betty Sessions left, no one else stepped forward in the Atlanta area. That is a shame, as the ladies in this area deserve better.
As for playing in the men's tours, like Kennedy's SE and the Fury Amateur, this is possible, and some of the better ladies do this. But let's face it, the competition is hardly fair, and the ladies do not necessarily get to play each other. The men's amateur tours in this area are very tough, with the likes of Userry, Song, Berrong, Jennings, and many other players that can Beat anyone (including pros) on a good day. I don't think many of the ladies would look forward to this kind of challenge (though some can hold their own).
If any of you guys have a pool hall that would sponsor a ladies Tour, I would be more than willing to help run the tourney, or even run it entirely. I don't want any money, just want an opportunity for the Southern Gals to have a Tour (Sorry, Florida is not really in the South - Smile).
Thanks.

I've seen Irish play a couple of times at what use to be Coronado Lanes in Makati. She was practicing with Dodong Adam at that time. Pretty good player and very down to earth as well.

Irish is cute!!!

If she needs a spousal visa, I may step up to the plate :D

I could be wrong, but I've always thought this and I've heard others mention the same thing.... wouldn't it actually be a good thing for her to play in at least some of these? If I'm playing someone better than myself, I bring my "A" game. Bearing down and focusing more was a natural reaction when I played someone better. One of the reasons I rarely played women when I did play pool was because it wasn't any competition. (there were a few out there but generally speaking, back when I played there were very few women that played in that area) It just seems to me that it would help her more than it would hurt her... JMHO FWIW ;)
