Yes this will be sorta pool related...as everyone on here knows by now, my wife just did a 10 day stay in our local hospital. The care she received was tremendous to say the least. And how you ask is this pool related. Well the excellent care she received was 80% from Philippino nurses who were schooled in the Philippines. (4 year degree is required there). These nurses are schooled in english for a minimum of a year before they can come here and work. They explained to me that there are many schools for nursing there. They claim that that is the easiest way to get away from the poverty there. They then come here and are under contract to the hospital that sponsors them for 3 1/2 years..And they claim that there are over 600 nurses from there working here through out this country and more coming over every month. One nurse told me that the monthly salary for a nurse in the Philippines is roughly $200.00 american dollars per month,,yes,,,per month.........

now for the pool relating factor. I talked with many of the philippine workers and we talk about Efren And Francisco Bustamante. These were the only 2 players that most of them knew personally. some of the nurses have never heard of Ronnie Alcano, Marlon Manalo, Dennis Oracullo. and the others. Although some did mentioned that they had heard of Alex Pagulayan.and Rudolpho Luat...... they told me that Efren is so revered over there. and that he is 1 of 2 National heroes.. (Manny Pacqua is the other) That he is basically a multimillionaire there. They also told me how humble he is. They told me how he is always helping others less fortunate than himself whether they are family or not and he does not flaunt what he has. It was great to hear such a humble description of Efren. On 1 of the few times i came home to shower and what have you (yes i lived in the room with my wife 24/7) i always came on AZ billiards and printed out articles on players from their home land. They really appreciated it and got a kick out of reading them. Made them proud and i swear they stood a couple of inches taller from being so proud....Anyway, that is my story.........mike

That's true Mike.. A lot of Filipinos are taking up nursing with the plan of going to the USA after graduation. Its a sad fact that even Doctors who have practiced medicine for years are enrolling in nursing schools because what they are earning is just a fraction of what they would earn if they worked as nurses there in the US. A good chunk of nurses there are licensed physicians back in Manila. And about the good command of the english language, since the 1st grade up to college, english has always been a part of the curriculum.

Great reading. But you should ask how much were their sign on bonus?Could be from a $1000 up to $5000 depending which hospital.

Personally i don't care about sign on bonus's. But i have to give credit where credit is due. These nurses from the Philippines lack nothing and are very articulate and caring. And they never complain. When i did need some help with my wife and the Philippino nurses were taking care of her, i never had to wait more than a minute or 2 for them to come help me. The 1 american nurse i had 1 day took 10 minutes to come help after telling me over the intercon she would be right there. Her excuse, she wanted to finish her hot sandwich before it got cold. I could not believe she told me that. I just told her she could have just put it into the microwave for a few seconds..She just looked at me.....As far as i am concerned, the Philippino nurses had it all over the American nurses. Atleast with this visit.....mike

Filipinos like to work in Casinos too i gather. In Reno, the IPT crowd was easily 30% filipino. They are real enthusiastic fans.

There are a lot more than 600 Philippino nurses working in the USA now. I would venture to guess that there are more than 600 just in the Tampa Bay area. Like all groups, including nurses from the USA, some are good, some are bad, and some are average. I worked with a lot of Philoppino nurses in the hospital and in rehab centers and I found just as many of them lazy as any other group. Johnnyt

There's actually sort of a culture of nursing and domestic help within Filipino women as an etnrance to the US. There's even a book that details the Filipino willingness to supplement to diminishing pool of nurses in the US. Strange that I ever thought a book I read as an undergrad would one day help me seem smart on a pool forum!!

It's titled "Empire of Care: Nursing and Migration in Filipino American History"

These are the main reason for this surge of Filipino nurses;

1. US is not producing enough nurses to cater the need of the aging baby boomers.

2. Inner city hospitals are having a hard time recruiting domestic nurses.

3. Nurses have the shortest waiting time for green-card approval.

4. Nurses in the Philippines are taught in English. So no re-learning of terminologies are needed.
