i'll get the ball rolling because it looks like no one is posting. it's weird that without the old threads, this forum looks bare.

anyone know where i can get tapes of some high profile tournaments from the phillipines?

also why are there great men phillpino players, but no women? i have my own answer but i'd like to hear other opinions.

I believe the reason there are very few Filipinas (denotes female gender) playing pool is because of the culture difference. The men in the Phillipines like to go out and play pool as their form of recreation. The women, on the other hand, tend to visit each other at home and are more involved with the family. The roles there are more clearly defined and it less likely that the women would encroach on the mens' activities. I'm not subscribing to this, I'm just trying to give you an answer as to why there doesn't seem to be any Filipino women playing the game.

Perhaps some of the Filipino women here in this country will start to venture out and start playing pool seriously. It would be nice to see a female version of some of the great male players.
 
i actually noticed a filipina playing pool at my PH, and the thought occured to me then, because i had never seen a filipina play before.
 
Bruin, I don't really know where you can find tapes of high profile Philippine touraments, except for looking for a pool fan from over there that tapes some himself.

On the other hand, check out the matchroom sports forums, KC over there is doing a lot of converting from VHS to digital and then posting matches online for folks to check out. I have seen a couple with Bustamante in the ones that he has posted.

Regarding Filipina pool players, I think it is only now that they're coming out. (Singapore recently hosted a Women's Pool Championship where the Philippine contingent showed promise. The Philippines returned the favor by inviting the Singaporeans over for an exhibition.)

And I think Efren's win at Cardiff had a lot to do with it. During and after that tournament which was televised live (with succeeding coverage by the newspapers the following day), interest in billiards surged. After Efren's win, a lot of upscale pool halls sprouted like mushrooms. Before, it was considered in bad taste for women to be seen in billiard halls. And why should it be? Billiard joints used to be seedy, smoky places where gamblers or bums used to hang-out. All of a sudden, it was fashionable.

Whereas before girls just tagged along with their boyfriends to the billiard halls, now they were going there and playing, with or without their boyfriends!

There are now good Filipina players although i forgot their names :D
However skills wise they are not at par yet with the likes of Jeanette
Lee, Alison Fisher and the like. As told by Renegade they we're
invited to singapore last year and the player from our country (Philippines)
wins it, if i remember it right. As for why not many Filipina women
playing pool maybe because of the tag or association that has to do
with it. As Renegade says it is much associated with gambling here, because
pool here is played 95% as a gamble. That's why in one of Bustamante's
interview he emphasized that many filipino gambles and a lot of them
as their means of income, so if they dont play good they would end up
as having nothing to eat at the table. So playing pool is like life and
death for many of them here. Culture wise filipina are homey compare
to their western counterparts however nowadays that has changed
a lot of women now drinks, smoke and of course play pool.
 
There are filipinas playing pool. Although they are not yet near the caliber of Jeannette Lee and the likes. They are showing promise. In the Asian 8-ball held in Singapore 2 yrs ago. 3 out of the 4 semifinalist were Filipinas. The champion was a filipina who also competed in the Tokyo 9-ball if im not mistaken. From what I have heard, some of the filipinas was able to beat some big names in the philippines. They formed a womens team a while back, haven't heard much about it now though.
 
Women in the Philippines

In my travels to the Philippines, there were plenty of women shooting pool. Far more than in the U.S. I found the level of play (and this includes the women)to be far above the U.S. In the Philippines, the casual player in a bar or pool hall playing a friendly game was the equivalent of the people who play in the amature tournaments here in the U.S. Also, in the P.I., everybody played on 4.5 x 9 - No Bar boxes. They also played by BCA rules and not some stupid madeup "bar rules".

Another side to why the lack of Filipinas might be there imigration laws. It is very difficult for women in particular to get a visa. The Philippine government is really trying to repair their reputation of being a supplier of mail-order brides. So, unless the woman has a great job, kids at home and the equivalent of about 10K U.S. dollars in the bank, they won't grant a visa because they figure she won't come back. Very few women get out except on a Fiance visa . . . then she has 90 days to get married. JMHO.

Now, she can also ge a visa for being an entertainer or sports figure . . . like Efren Reyes . . . but she better be exceptional. She could then get somebody like Puyat Sports to sponsor her and grease the wheels with imigration. I have heard that Puyat is starting to work with a few women over there. With the international flavor on the WPBA tour, it would be nice to see the Philippines represented.

Also about my travel to the Philippines, the reason they use BCA rules or International rules in every pool halls is to eliminate any arguments. It is written so it shall be done.

There are good lady players here in the Philippines and the best two are Rubilen Amit who won the Asian 8-ball Championships and was the first and only female to qualify to play in the Tokyo 9-Ball. She beat Lee Van Corteza and Roel Esquillo in the qualifiers. Then there's Iris Ranola who beats guys in big money games. Guys like Manny Pacquiao for 400,000 pesos or close to $8,000.
