Got no response in "ask instructor" so i'll try here: how do the 'pino players in general and Efren specifically, spin the cue ball? Back-hand, front hnd. or a mix of the two? Has anyone stood behind Efren and got a good look at this? His ability to generate controllable spin is crazy.

His ability to generate controllable spin is due to his stroke.

This topic has been discussed ad nauseam. Do a search.

BTW, it's 'Filipino'.

no need...

Efren is the one who taught me BHE in 99'.

He didn't call it that, but he described it to me. I didn't know what to call it until 2005 when conversing HERE with Colin Colenso about it. I also didn't know about the pivot point until then either.

I didn't believe it worked or start using it until discussing it with my friend Chip Klein in 2002.

They could not tell you, every time people ask how they aim or hit or kick, it's always "by feel". Look at some of the TAR podcasts on YouTube, they have like 1 hour interviews with the players including asking how they aim or kick or whatever.

I'm Sorry Dave you're misinformed...

It is not due to his stroke, he showed and explained BHE to me in 99' after I asked him a question...

He was practicing and set up a shot about a 1/16 of an inch off the foot rail on the eight dead straight in on the center diamond with the nine on the center diamond of the head rail.

The CB was one diamond away from the eight and he was stroking it with a ton of right on it and follow and getting perfect shape on the nine.

He did it about 9 or ten times in a row and I stopped him and asked how he was consistently putting so much shit on the ball.

That's when (translated through his good friend Alex who now owns Stix billiards in rancho cucamonga) he explained BHE to me.

Without a good stroke, you can hit the ball where ever you want and it won't do any good.

Admittedly...

Without a good stroke, you can hit the ball where ever you want and it won't do any good.

admittedly, the most difficult thing about using BHE is still stroking straight and not trying to steer the cue.

When learning how to use bhe, it is difficult to not try to STEER the cue, because it just doesn't feel right at first and you're right that you have to have good stroke mechanics, but the consistency of the spin that they use is because they're using BHE...

btw, this is also why you will rarely see filipinos use ld shafts and when they do, their bridge length will be right around 15-16" instead of 10-12" because the naturally end up at the cue's pivot point if they don't know about it.

Hey Dave, I know it's FILIPINO but thanks for correcting me anyway. All i asked( and Jaden answered )is how do the FILIPINOs use ENGLISH.

Parallel can give you a little extra on some shots. Saw guys working the cue with inside spin. I could not get as much spin until I tried parallel.

I tend to agree here. Parallel works ok for softer and outside but i have a much better chance of making a ball with inside by using BHE. Inside english i'm convinced is the work of the devil.

I think you might do better with inside english if you remember that it combines with collision induced throw. So...you need to 'aim' a bit thinner even though the squirt is to the outside & would add cut.

Outside english works against CIT but the squirt is into the ball which reduces cut.

It's a 3 part harmony but they each require a different balance because they interact differently with the collision induced throw.

Hope this helps in some way.

Best 2 You & All,
Rick

^notice how efren's elbow stops at one point and then his wrist follows-up with a "whipping" action.

If you can hit the ball wherever you want, you have a good stroke.

And even if you have a lousy stroke but happen to hit the ball where you want by accident, you'll get the same result as if you did it on purpose with a great stroke.

Hitting the intended spot-angle-speed is the definition of a good stroke. Doing it consistently is the definition of having a good stroke.
