Eleven of our nations top three-cushion champions who sent billiard balls spinning at the IBC's first major three-cushion tournament in Chicago's past thirty year history. Can you name a few of these "shooting stars" and their titles?

According to Jim Parker of the Illinois Billiard Club

Back row: Allen Gilbert, George Ashby, Bill Hawkins, Carlos Hallon, Luis Campos, Abel Calderon, and Mike Donnely.

Front row: Don't remember, Bob Strange, Loni Brandes, Stub Pilotte (I think), and Joe Diaz.

(I'm not sure what you mean by "titles".)

I think what he means by "titles" is the titles that each player has won.

I notice that there are, in fact, twelve people in the photograph. Which one doesn't count as a "top three-cushion champion"?

Mark, you right there are [12] twelve, but Lonnie Brandes was a special contender attraction. Wasn't this the era where there were two associations? Titles probably US National Billiard Champioship.

See June/July 2007 issue of ProfessorQBall magazine for an article about Lonnie Bonners, which mention the photo tournament [1975]. These articles from IBC and the coverage for Carom Billiards are the main reason I subscribe to Paul Frankel's magazine.

I was station at Great Lake, IL ['74-'78, as a U.S. Navy Recruit Company Commander]

Dmgwalsh, I hope IBC, Jim Parker, and you continue showing vintage billiard photos from the club.

Thank for sharing.

I think someone said her name is Loni Brandes.

I'll check with Jim and also find out who is far left bottom row. Someone named all the others.

Very nice picture, thanks for posting it.

I'll bet on the top row!!!!!! ;)

I'm not sure where Loni lived, but she played in the majority of the tournament, at least those held in the midwest, starting in the early 70's. I left Detroit area in Oct 1976 and lost track of her. She was a very nice player and capable of beating most on any given day, but not a champion. She was, however, a great lady to be around and a fierce competitor. She loved the game and it showed.

Allen Gilbert was the cream of the crop in America for many years and close to his peak during this time (peaked for 5-8 years, but continued to play great after his peak). In my opinion, Louis Campos was the next best player of this group. It's a shame he quit the game at an early age - maybe he moved back to Mexico. George Ashby may have been the next best & later proved to be the champion he aspired to. I think he won the US Nationals 2, maybe 3 times. Carlos Hallon just kept getting better and is still playing excellent billiards. Bill "The Hawk" Hawkins was just a blast to be around. Always had a joke, magic trick, whatever & his laugh was infectious. Bill held the high run in America for many years. Not sure what it was but I think it was 18 or something like that. He had it on his lisence plate.

That's all I can remember, but I had the pleasure to play against most of these folks, including Loni, over the years. It has been a great honor. But where's Shorty in the picture. He was very active in 3-cushion tourneys during this time?

Dave

Just for fun, here's a picture for you that Dino Andrews found & sent me. It's from a tournament held in Mike Donnelly's room in Monroe, MI in the erly 70's. I'm the young one with hair a little longer than the rest. :D

First row, fourth from the left was wrong. The man in the photo was one of our IBC's top contenders, Mr. Anthony (Tony) Amendola. While Tony was a fine player he was not a top national player and is the reason I mentioned only 11 top contenders, and not twelve.

number one on the bottom left is...
Mr. Joe McDivitt. A top ranked three-cushion contender who was highly visible in major three-cushion events hosted in the 1950s and 60's. Joe came out of retirement to compete in this IBC event
