Picking up a few Brunswick Medalist and a Monticello

Going to pick a few up this weekend. They use to be in a pool hall. Any certain things to look for when taking them apart and loading them up? Anything Medalist specific to note?

I have read that the GC, Medalist, and Monticello are very similar. This true? Pros? Cons? of the Medalist and Monticello?

I'm new to the 9' tables w/ 3 piece slates. I'm use to my 7' diamond w/ 1 piece slate and all connected rails and no shims!!!!

I am guessing pay attention when I disassemble and label everything? I'm using an enclosed trailer for transportation. Stacking the slates on top of each other or stand them on end?

I know the majority will say get a good(great!) mechanic to check it out and put it all back together for you! BUT I've got a few weeks left of my winter layoff and need something to do! What's the worse thing I could do to it while putting it back together?

Please enlighten me so I don't butcher something up beyond repair! If its beyond my skill level, I'm fine with asking for help. I'm just not sure what it entails yet!

Any and all comments( good and bad) are welcome as I'm not a table mechanic and not trying to be one . Just like some advice before I REALLY need one!

Thanks in advance, Brad

Things to Look Out For

ykndoit,

Beware of slate pins.

The slates may be indexed together with metal pins about 3/8 inch long. Lifting the end slates before sliding them apart enough to clear the pins can break a huge chip out of the tops of the slates.

My apology if you already knew this, but it it's worth repeating.

I did not know about them. Thanks for the heads up!

What's the best way to separate the slabs if they are bondo'ed together or will they just pull apart? Im guessing if they are seamed with bees wax this wont be a problem?

Bondo and slate seams

ykndoit,

I'm relatively new to the use of bondo. I have installed some slates with it, but never disassembled one. However, unless advised otherwise, I would use a heavy duty razor knife and a straight edge to score the bondo in the seam.
Also, I have a Rotozip with an assortment of cutting discs that would do the job.

Shortly, though, when the old pros wake up and see your post, they'll chime in with their solution.

Slowly jiggle/'walk' sideways while still laying flat, worked for me, till you are clear of any pipins, if any there. If stacking slate, be sure ALL staples or screwheads oranything else is not grinding on the slate as it may shift and gouge slate while in transit. Not good.

Thanks for the tip. So as long as there is good, even support, stacking is ok?

Anything to note when disassembling/reassembling the rails?

get some old blankets to put between each of the slates if you are stacking them.

got plenty of blankets and towels ready to go(grabbed the old towels so the wifey don't get all crazy on me!)

Any thing to note with the rails? whether it be what to look for when disassembling them? Or when reassembling them?

Also, is there any issues with taking apart the lower frame box? or should I try to keep it in one piece? Just thinking about space in the trailer on this one.....

Got them all home safe and sound! Monticello came apart easy and low and behold, the two medalists were already apart! Monticello a 70's table and the two medalists were 90's. Monticello in ok shape, the medalists in decent shape. My brother got the monticello and a friend and I got the other two.

Here are some pics of the rails and corner castings....(other stuff is still dirty and havent had a chance to wipe them down before pics).....

I'm guessing those are the original cushions? and is that the year(1996) of those cushions?
They seem still good, no hardening. Possibly could be reseated as there are tiny places you can separate them from rail.

Also, the Medalist logo is missing on my head rail but was still intact on friends. Can I find another one?

Should I try to fix( get the nicks out?) those castings or should I just leave them alone? They all look about like that.

More pics to come later....

try classicbilliards.net for any missing pieces you might need.

also I had a gc3 redone last year and had my castings powdercoated. look much better and will definantly give your table new life.

Were those origionally a copper color like mine?

I like the look of those! Will probably do something like that with mine instead of trying to make them look like new. I was more concerned about getting rid of the nicks in them.

I think I am going to try to find some used simonis cloth for the bed for now instead of redoing the whole table. I figure I will wait until I get new cushions to redo everything.

SOOOOO, if anyone has any old simonis bed cloth they are looking to get rid of, feel free to get ahold of me and I will gladly take it off your hands and pay you for your time and shipping.
