What is the definition of a "pinch" shot? Here is an example from the 2005 DCC Bank Ring game:

Tony Coleman banks the 13-ball cross-side, and everyone calls it a pinch shot. I've heard this term before, and have a guess at what it implies, but it would be nice to know for sure. Does it simply mean, "to throw the object ball using English so that you are able to get the desired angle with a fuller hit, which will make the cue ball glance less"? In this case, the reason to do that would be to avoid the kiss. Well, I think I may have answered my own question. LOL.

Is that correct, and if so, are there any other terms that mean the same thing?
 
To pinch a bank, simply means to shorten the angle. When a bank angle is running long, you can sometimes "pinch" the shot and bring it short enough to make it. Contrary to popular opinion, you dont always need to use reverse, or any side english for that matter, in order to pinch a shot.

Does the term 'pinch' also apply to any other shots in pool, besides banks? For example, say you have a shot that is almost straight-in, just a very slight angle. And say you want to stop the cueball as dead as possible, so you hit with low outside english to throw it in slightly. Is that also called a pinch, or is there some other term for the shot I am describing?

Wow. Really? I always thought a pinched bank was the types of bank that the cueball traps the object ball before leaving it allowing the object ball to leak across the table. Almost like a double kiss, which it just might really be, but who would call it? What's that called?

I think pinch just means "stiffened" banks where you use speed and/or spin to shorten the angle off the rail. I usually use it to avoid a double-kiss on a shot like the one you diagrammed. Also, Freddy was the one commentating that ring game, and thus the one using the term "pinch shot" in your example, so his definition is right by definition.

The other shot you described is what I call "nip" or "nip draw", where you hit the ball very low and soft so that the CB has some backspin and very little speed when it hits the object ball, which holds it very close to the point of contact even when there's some angle involved.

Thanks, Andrew. Yeah, when Freddy was saying pinch, and Scott said pinch, and maybe someone else might have even said pinch, I had to figure out for sure what the heck was a pinch. LOL. Anyway, that was a really fun match to watch, and got really exciting at the end. I rewound and watched the second to last bank in the match probably 10 times. :D
 
A pinch shot, as I know it, usually refers to banks only. Generally, if you hit a bank that the natural angle banks about a half diamond long, you can "pinch" it in by hitting firm with low inside. The speed and english shortens up the angle and the low gets the CB out of the way.

With the 13 ball that close to the rail---I don't see how it can be banked in the side if the blue line is the path of the cue ball.. What am I missing? I'm in my normal state of confusion.
 
The term Pinch is used to describe how the internal angle of reflection is decreased from the natural angle of incidence.

When thinking about a light beam reflecting off of a surface, the angle of incidence = angle of reflection. The same holds true for pool when no english, top, or draw is used.

If one wants to decrease this angle, while avoiding a double-kiss, he must "Pinch" or decrease this reflective angle by using English (Side), using topspin, and/or hitting with greater speed.

Widening the angle would be done by hitting the ball more slowly, with draw, or outside English.
 
Thanks guys. Glad to know now that a pinch cannot refer to anything but a bank. See, if it weren't for AzB, I might have called a 'nip' a 'pinch'. :eek:

Its possible that my diagram of the 13 and cueball aren't exactly perfect. If you haven't watched that shot in the video yet, you should check it out (its free :)). It was close enough to fool Billy Incardona, as he was saying it had to be shot cross-corner. Freddy disagreed and was right of course.

The cue ball does take the path shown in the diagram, but first the 13 crosses out of the way before the cue ball rolls along the blue line. I had to watch the shot a few times to be sure of what happened. LOL. Good shot.

I would say that it never holds true for pool. Because of the cushion properties, a sliding cueball with no english, top, or draw will almost always bank short. Diamond cushions that I've played on recently are closer to banking "not short" with a sliding ball with no spin, but still are short.
