Pins & inserts

I am probably going about this all the wrong way buy when I buy my lathe I will have all of the parts that I need to started immediatly. I read a post a while back about how most good cue makers buy a certian kind of tap for a certian type, size and pin. If memory serves correctly I believe they were expansive. Like $250 for 3 taps.

My question is this. What is the best pin and insert to use for a beginner? size/pitch? Am i correct in assuming that most cuemakers use the same pin/insert on a constant basses. What is the best tap to use and where can I get some?
Thanks a bunch

You can get everything you need from Prather's or Atlas Billiards Supply.

You will need the 3/8-10, 5/16-14, 5/16-18, 7/16/14 and Radial Taps and pins to start with. You will need others as time progresses. The price is nowhere near $250.00 for all the 4 basic taps. Atlas is out of stock at present - try Prather's. I prefer the undersize Radial Tap at Atlas.

Good cuemaking,

A 3/8-10 is the SIMPLEST in my opinion, because there is no insert. In the beginning keep it as simple as possible. For the butt end of the joint you drill a hole, run the tap in & out, put some glue on the screw & screw it in. For the shaft you drill a hole run the tap in & out & you're done. You will probably find it best to do your drilling in several steps, working up to the proper hole size. If you're going to do repairs you will need the other things that Arnot mentioned. Prathers will help you pck one just call & ask Jeff ...JER
