I'm familiar with Fast Eddies in Fairfax and the Shark Club not too far from there, but are there any other rooms that have daily pool specials nearby?

Check out First Break in Sterling, Virginia. As a matter of fact, the Tiger/Planet Pool Tour is having a $1,500-added 8-ball tournament this weekend, beginning at 12:00 noon on Saturday: http://planet-pool.com/viewevent.aspx?EventID=44

Every Thursday night at 8:00 p.m., there is a $25-entry-fee 9-ball tournament at First Break as well.

I'm not sure how far you want to travel from Northern Virginia, but I just heard it through the pool grapevine last night that Danny Green is working at the Sportsman Lounge in Laurel, MD, and as Danny is wont to do, he's running multiple $10-entry-fee tournaments on Friday and Saturday nights because there is a strong pool culture in Laurel. I remember when this joint was known as B&E's, and you could ALWAYS catch a nice little $20 ring game on the weekends.

On Friday, December 16th, the FIRST Midnight Madness will be launched at Bill and Billies Cuesports in Arnold, MD, beginning at 11:59 p.m. Limited to 32 players, the entry fee is $100, double elimination and Texas Express rules. Payout based on 32: 1st, $1,000; 2nd, $600; 3rd, $400; 4th, $300; 5th, $200; and 6th-8th, $125. Call Mike Ricciardella [co-promoter] at (301) 928-4191 for more details, and tell him "Jennie" sent you. :p

Fast Eddie's in Springfield, VA has free pool from 11-5, 7 days a week, with $8 food purchase. Usually action in there too.

This is also true of the Fast Eddie's in Fairfax, except the part about the action. You can probably find a small game of stakes there many days, with the five or six guys who are daytime regulars in there, at least until you beat them a few too many times (not saying you will, I have no idea what speed you shoot). They mostly play straight pool, but not exclusively.

Andrew,

Do you play at the shark club on tuesdays?

I used to. I started playing seriously (and by that I mean leagues) about two years ago, and have been playing at Fast Eddies Fairfax on Thursdays the whole time, and for a couple of those seasons I also played at Shark Club on Tuesdays.

Are you asking because you know me? I'm a sort of tall white guy with a beard, if that helps.

Irainian Fred!!!!

Ooooh- THAT'S scary!!;)

What an F'in character that guy is! He was betting on me on the rail recently and sharked the $hit out of my opponent. The guy he was betting against pulled up at the end of the set and the guy I was plaaying an I upped our bet- Freddie wanted a pice of it, I turned him down and then he tried to shark me! After I made him $! Only in the pool room...

First Break in Sterling:
They have a monthly deal there where for $75/month you can play all you want up to 7:00 PM or for $150/month you play all you want any time. Club membership or something.

In addition to those listed, Ken Harding let me know that the place that used to be Breakers in Herndon is open again. It is under new management with a new decor. Gold Crown 4's but with weekend bands coming in so be aware.

If you are up for the drive, a brand new Champions is opening this afternoon at 3:00 PM in Leesburg on East Market Street. That is what I heard but cannot confirm but I am going to visit the place on Sunday to play.

Hope this helps!

Freddy is sole the reason why whenever I play one pocket with ANYONE nowadays, I put my balls in the tray.

But I will give him this -- most pool players simply talk like they're high rollers; Freddy will actually put the money up and bet. That's more than I can say for most players.

There's 9 ball action to be had there from time to time, also. Some of those guys shooting straight pool ain't no slouches, either...

Yeah my friend went up to play him some 9ball. That was a mistake my friend got so pissed at him for trying to cheat every rack he just quit. That pissed fred off cause he was down. My friend said he would play only if he didnt talk and if they got someone to ref the match they couldnt agree on anyone so my friend just quit. It was pretty funny the stuff he would try to pull!

Breakers in Herndon

I visited the new Breakers in Herndon on Saturday for the first time. It just opened about a week ago and here is what I can tell you.

I used to visit the old Breakers where the decor was lots of wood with gorgeous panels in the bar area, a large wood bar with a very classical look. Not much in the way of being a sports bar or anything for anyone who wanted to play pool but a true billiard establishment.

Breakers is still located on the 4th floor of the Herndon clock tower. That is 2445 Centreville Road Herndon, VA 20171 (703-793-6233). The new manager is David Park and he is very social and professional.

The new Breakers is a sports bar where all the wood panels are now gone. There is a modern look to the facility with stainless steel around everywhere. There are stainless steel gates and rails that isolate parts of the establishment, the stainless steel will guide you to the clean restrooms and the stair banisters are made of stainless steel as well. It is unusual to see that much stainless steel but it is tastefully done.

This is of course a sports bar with billiard tables. What they have are 16 brand-new Gold Crown 4’s. Gorgeous! There are 6 in the upstairs area where I believe it may be a non-smokers area. There are 4 off to the side where I played (more room around the tables to move) and of course the 6 main tables in front of the bar and the receptionist desk (not a pro table with gear and cues like in the past). The area with the 6 tables is the area that the frequent and established players appear to have set up. Saw Mark Powell (BCA certified instructor in Northern VA) just lighting up the table and moving the cue ball around so effortlessly. Maybe that is why I moved to the other side – my game has a long way to go! The tables are kept clean with an attendant cleaning down the cloth after each session at the time you close out. What an idea! I also saw many of the players who used to frequent Breakers a couple of years ago who were playing at First Break for a while but have moved on since. It was great to run into some of the old friends in the new establishment.

Now this is sports bar so there are TV everywhere. You cannot turn around without having a TV set with something on. With it being Saturday afternoon, the college games were on but no one was really watching with much interest. The audio on the TV’s could be heard but that was only when the music was not playing.
One thing that made it difficult for me to enjoy was the loud music that was playing. Could not hear my friend talk to me across the length of the table at all. Major distraction for this old fool but the younger crowd loved it and fed the music box dollars on end. Another thing to mention is that Breakers will have a live bands on weekends so keep this in mind if you are after a players paradise on weekends. Not sure what it may bring in the way of billiard opportunities but management is trying to do something to get people in and spending money.

Now the menu, had lots of choices with the normal items (burgers, wings, chicken nuggets in some batter with dipping sauce) but I did not try anything out at this time. Had lunch prior to arriving.

Sorry if my write up does not match up to the exceptional work that Jam posts but this is my first attempt to share a new billiard establishment with my AZB friends.
I did enjoy my time there and will make stops in Breakers to play.

Thanks,
Myron

Breakers

Thanks. Actually I just got back. (I live in Reston so it's only about 5 minutes away.) They open at 11 AM seven days a week. A really nice room: New GCs, Simonis cloth, Centennial balls. The only problem is that, unlike (e.g.) Fast Eddie's and Hard Times, they don't offer free pool if you buy food, which more or less doubles the cost. BTW, Mark Powell and Ken Harding were there and are using it as their base of operations for lessons--as they did the old Breakers. They're booked until March--wonder if that's an indication that interest in pool is rebounding.
