Places to play in Philly

I'll be going to Philadelphia on business for a few days, and wondered where's the best spot to go and pick up a game, which places the players go to, what the hourly rates are, and so on.

Thanks,

Flex

I've only been to a few in Philly, I lived in the Burbs.

1. Tacony Billiards...right by the Tacony Palmyra bridge...action action action.

2. Family Billiards in Feasterville...The Fusco's own it, Karen Core plays there

3. South Philly Billiards....Hav'nt been there in YEARS, so I"m not sure if it's still there.

>>>Where I'd start<<< Drexeline Billiards....Drexelhhill....Florida Bob owns it, great place with excelent equipment.....

Go to pool room.com for more info...

Have fun, Gerry

Where in Philly are you going to be staying? Philly is a large city and because it's north of the mason dixon line, the streets (one ways) can get confusing. I live about an hour from Philly and I avoid driving through the heart of it if I can.

I'm not familiar with any rooms except Dave & Busters and Drexeline that Gerry mentioned. They're nowhere near each other! Are you going to be in the downtown area or in an outer area like Valley Forge, Levittown, etc?

There's a few people that come on here that will be able to help you out but you'll have to narrow it down a little bit & say which part of Philly you'll be in.

I'll be in the downtown area, walking distance to the historic sites, and so on. Dock Street area.

If you don't have any wheels, then Dave and Buster's is about all you'll be able to get to without spending a fortune on taxi cabs. They're located on Columbus Blvd with AE Schmidt tables that play well.

There is absolutely nowhere in that area.. best bet is Tacony Billiards.
efren reyes and Bustamante always stop in if they are in the area. (you can always find action there.. especially at daytime. mostly one pocket
or backpocket 9 ball. but im sure someone will play you whatever you want :) )

sadly.. South Philly billiards is closed. that was a really nice place for action :(

You can try BallBusters in South Philly. or Mosconi in south philly also.
those are closer...but I dont know how the action is there, as I mostly frequent Boulevard Billiards or Tacony Billiards.

Fusco's has a new place. Forget what its called but its no longer Family Rec. Center. I hear it's real nice though. Karen Corr plays out of that one.

There used to be a place on Delaware Ave (aka Chri Columbus Blvd) called Riverfront. Not sure if it's still around or not. Haven't been there in a while.

Boulevard Billiards on Roosevelt Blvd is pretty shady, or was last time I was there a few years ago, but good action.

Pete Fusco's new place is called "The Spot" and it's in Bristol, PA.

yes..Riverfront is closed.. there was a shooting or stabbing a few years back and they shut it down right after..
Boulevard billiards.. was doing well until 2 people got shot and killed about a year ago. after legal problems..its starting to pick up again.. as for being shady....its possible.. I guess I dont notice because I'm there everyday. I just may be used to it :D

there is also a pool hall im Manayunk.. I think Main St. its a very upscale place.. not sure if its still there. its been a long time..but I think its called River City Billiards.

one other one worth mentioning is on Front & Olney..called 123 billiards. ..2 floors.. first floor pool tables.. second floor Billiard tables..

as long as were are on the subject.. I'm looking for a pool hall that has a snooker table around this area.. Fuscos old place had one about 7 years ago..but they got rid of it :(

Rack M Up in Frazer has one. It's in pretty decent shape, too. Lancaster Pike 1 mile south of Rt 202.

cool thanks
.. 1 hour drive.. a bit far..but hey.. its better than nothing :)

River City in Manayunk closed down. The owner of the actual building was a friend of mine from high schools father.
He sold the building a couple of years ago, and the new owner jacked the rent up so that the pool hall couldn't fade it.

If you are in Center City's historic area, you are about halfway between Tacony, and Drexeline, with Tacony being closer.
Tacony is North on 95, then Bridge Street Exit(bear right), the a left when the Nudi Bar is on your right(i forget the street, but i think the bar is called Dangerous Curves, and then an immediate right turn after the underpass.
Drexeline, is South on 95, to 476 towards Plymouth meeting, exit on route 1 north (make a right) and go straight (stay in the middle right after the exit cause you have an underpass you have to go through)for a couple of miles till you come to a fork in the road with an APLUS/SUNOCO gas station directly on the other side of the fork, and a shopping center on your right hand side.
After bearing right at the fork, you make an IMMEDIATE right turn into the parking lot where the big shoe store is, and go BEHIND that building to find Drexeline.

If you take the Vine street Expressway 676 west towards 76, and go east, if you stay on 76 east, until you get to the PASSAYUNK AVE exit, make a right, go OVER the bridge, and as you are on the downside of the bridge, you make a right before the bridge incline ends, BEFORE the Strip bar called the Purple Orchid, and you will see a peep show/bookstore on the right hand side.
BALLBUSTERS is right next to it, and has a weekly tournament tonight where you can find Jimmy Fusco weekly, Sometimes Petey Fusco, and many other top talent regulars from the city playing tonight.
Other than that, I have no idea what is actually available downtown.

Hope this helps you out

Classic Billiards in Phoenixville has a snooker table as well.
It is actually the sister table to the one at Frazier.

places to play.... and action ratings

Philly...
1. Tacony Billiards - action? thats where you go
action rating 8 out of 10
2. The Spot - feasterville - Petey fuscos, BEAUTIFUL room
action rating 6 out of 10 (depends on who is there... maybe karen corr will play ya some)
3. Drexelline - Bob Maidoff's room - good tournament on tuesday 64 players...
action rating - 5 out of 10 unless on tuesday
4. South Jersey - don't think its there
5. Ball Busters - better bring a weapon
action rating - dunno, but if your in a game, its probably a bad one, don't play back pocket if any advice at all

NJ pool rooms - right over the bridge
1. green room - 11 tables, nice room
action rating 4 out of 10, you have to know when to go, good tournament on monday's - right over ben franklin bridge
2. Hot Shots - HUGE room, bunch of kids, good tournament on thursdays
action rating 3 out of 10, again depends if you make appointments, there have been known games there - right over walt whitman bridge

Steve, the owner of Classic Billiards used to be a partner at Cue Time here in Chicago. He has a triple shimmed table at Classic. Nice room but too smokey for me... and I'm a smoker. I didn't see any action but lots of regulars. There's a diner up the road that serves something called Scrapple. DO NOT EAT IT.

The Green Room is right over the Tacony Bridge on Rt73.

Where's Hot Shots?

Hot Shots is in Deptford or something like that, maybe it's the Deptford shopping center in Jersey.

As for action at Classic.

The ONLY action that was ever there, and that was if he was playing, was SUTTERBY.

He no longer plays out of that room, and as a result, there isn't any action there.
