Planet Pool 8 ball

I heard Brandon Shuff is going to play in it. For only playing pool 3 years, this kid's caught my attention, on more than one occasion.

Wonder if they'll let Pookie in! He's not a member of an organization and lives in that neck of the woods (LOL).

If I got in it, I'd be the house fish on those 9-footers, but I'm still strongly considering making my comeback debut at Fast Break this weekend! It'd be worth it just to see how KM likes being a railbird while JAM's in the pit! (LOL)

Will you be there regardless? IMO, you should play...the more competition, the merrier! LOL!

I'm hoping to, Landshark. It sounds like a great time! I'm going out of town the following week and have to make sure all my ducks are in a row on the homefront.

Up at Orange Ball Billiards in Rockville, Maryland, they have a weekly 8-ball league which is run in a round-robin format. The league is growing, and folks seem to have taken a liking to the way it's run AND they love 8-ball. We were there last night, and while the weekly 9-ball tournament was going on, the leagues were battling it out on their side of the room. They outnumbered us 9-ball shooters, 10 to 1.

This weekly 9-ball tournament at Orange Ball Billiards every Wednesday night is growing. If they get more than 16 players, it's $100 added; more than 32 players, $200 is added. With a $20 entry fee, it's attracting quite a few players. They've got an excellent menu with a variety of items, but my favorite is an Asian delight known as the Bibimbap Bowl with shrimp or chicken! :D

These tournaments are a blast, and it's great to be around players like Keith, Ryan, Brandon, etc. It really adds to the exciting atmosphere and, in my experience, really brings my game up a notch. Unfortunately it's hard to beat these guys on your best day, but you can't get better pool experience for $20, even if you're 2 and out.

Well Wednesdays are my local league nights. :( Maybe in the summer on an off night we can come check this out. Rockville is like a 45 min drive, so that is also a down fall with Thursday being a work day. But heck yeah, $20 is an awesome entry!

I got word that Champion Billiards in Frederick had a Sat. morning APA handicapped tourney where the railbirds bid on ya so they can back ya. You (the player) have the option to split or not...does anyone know if this is still occurring?

Hopefully this summer I will be able to get around more!

so this is it? 3 whole people from the board playing???

I'll be there. I think it's going to drag on for awhile since there are only 11 tables and potentially 100 entrants! I'm bringing a laptop and some dvd's! Does anyone know if this is a "no smoking" venue? I'm getting spoiled by Montgomery county's "no smoking" laws!

i think they were expecting anywhere from 40 to 60.......if a 100 show up, i might just head to luray for that tourney..........LOL

No not LOL! Head on over! First Break has a mandatory smoking policy. Everyone must(breathe) smoke.

I'm going to be there Saturday till they quit playing then I'll come home. I hadn't thought about the smoking issue, whew, I don't think I've ever played where I couldn't smoke. Is it possible to make a ball without smoke in the atmosphere? I know it would eliminate one of my favorite excesses, 'I got smoke in my eye', then I rub my eye, drop a couple tears and hope some cute gal comes over to console me. :D

LOL. If he'd be bringing me anything, it'd be a triple-shot, two pumps of sugar-free vanilla, grande latte, skim, with a hit of whipped cream. :D

I've been hearing lots of talk about PP 8-ball tournament this weekend at Fast Break in Sterling, Virginia. For folks who haven't been there before, it's kind of hidden in the BACK furthest most corner of a major shopping center and cannot be seen from the road. I got lost the first time I went due to bad street markings.

Fast Break has a full bar and menu, and the staff is upbeat, friendly, and you don't have to send a flare up in the air to get service. It's a very casual atmosphere. Between matches, some players enjoy playing gin, chess, and backgammon. The bar area is elevated a little from the main pool-playing area, which provides good viewing of various matches. The pool room is located on the second floor, and there is PLENTY of parking available. :)

It is nice that this is a mixed tournament, open to ladies and men. A $40 entry fee is quite affordable. Picture below of one of the regular lady players and Cece, the tournament director!

In Frederick, it is still happening. All Star Billiards (used to be ChampionsOpens at 11:00. Calcutta starts at 12:00 and usually lasts till 1:00. Then play starts and you could be there for the rest of the afternoon and then some if you win.

The main guy at All-Star Billiards in Frederick was very, very good friends with "Geese," who passed away last year in Florida. Geese was a very well-known player from Maryland. I recently received an e-mail notifying me that Geese's old Sneaky Pete cue is up on eBAY right now. The proceeds are going to Geese's mother, who is widowed and moved back up here from Florida. I thought that was a real nice gesture for All-Star Billiards to help raise monies for Geese's mom.

Here's the link Geese's cue stick on eBay. The current bid is $255. It's an older cue, and if Geese was using it, I know it has a good "hit." Sneaky Pete cue for sale on eBay [ends February 12th]

Geese had one of the most beautiful strokes I've ever seen. When he and his mom moved to Florida from Maryland about 6 or 7 years ago, Geese never stopped calling back home to find out what's happening and to keep in tocuh with his friends at All-Star Billiards in Frederick, Jack and Jill's in Glen Burnie, and USA Billiards in Laurel. He made the rounds by phone on a daily basis. He was a true road warrior, a dinosaur in today's pool world, and I miss him.
