I just won my weekly tournament 3rd week in a row, technically my son and I split the finals but I was in the hot-seat. No-one is complaining, but.... it's a bunch of nice guys, many are improving D and C players that I like teaching, and I like to see new people cash.

I was thinking or either sitting out, or sitting out but still putting in the $7 entry fee to add to the pot. I will be there anyway because my son plays every week.

Would you just play normally, sit out, or sit out and toss in a few $ to the pot? I have won several times in a row before, and have not sit out then, but don't think I have ever won it 4 times in a row. I remember SVB telling a story about how he won some local event 40 times in a row or something LOL.

Since I know you, let me see if I can get away with this answer :)

If you're there for your son, then you sit and watch. Donate if you want, but it's a $7 tournament. This tournament isn't for you, and I think you're just passing the time, maybe to keep your stroke, and if you happen to win, great. If you lose, ... it's a $7 tournament and you're there for your son.

Both of you are supporting a tournament probably out of loyalty. Your time might be better spent offering lessons to the guys who go two and out.

Then head to the Joss Tour or Marc Dionne's events.
 
Play in the tournament, play your best game every game. I would personally take issue with the player I am chasing sitting out because he thinks he wins too much. I assume you think the "weaker" players learn nothing from playing you during the tournament...that'd be wrong. We have a couple of pros that play in some of our local tournaments that you can't even get on a table for $7 a game...but in the $10 weekly tournament you could play two or three of them if you were to do really well.

Don't assume people don't want to play you because you are winning...most of us want to play up, not down.
 
Raise the entry fee, and the better players will come out of the woodwork and relieve you of your problem.
 
To the op- I would want you playing.I remember being a lower sl player and tourney play was about the only time I could get a good player to play me.
 
simple, be nice and play but dont play great and just get like third for a few times.
 
Play. Play your best. Whenever you win, put the money into a "break-and-run" pot, or put it toward the junior program fund-raiser, or half and half.
 
I would just sit out the week after you have won. Be there to support your son and the other players. There is value to the lower level players playing good players. The ones that really want to get better will appreciate you playing. But, getting your teeth kicked in each week by stronger players can get old too. Just give em a break every so often but always play your best because in the long run it will help the lower level players.

I like this. Or run a different tourney. I know you play well. I havent seen your son play but I trust your judgement and I'm sure he plays well too.

Id rather go 2 and out in a higher priced tourney with tough competition then snap off a cheap easy one every week. It's strange to say that, but beating hacks really isnt going to benefit anyone. Sure it's fun to do every once in a while.

Exactly and that's okay once in a while but if it happens every week then lower level players will stop showing up to play.

I do go there because I like the room, and for a bit of practice, not really for tough competition or winning money from the thing. But as far as it being not for me, I am guessing you mean my skill level is too good for it? First thanks! LOL, there are a few there that do give me a solid game, so it's not like I know I will walk over everyone there plus my son is getting to be equal in his winning there. I am guessing between me and him we end up 1st or second about half the time, but that is when there are only a few other B players there. At times we get a few more our level there and a few times a low A or two, then it's a bit more of a challenge.

I have done that a few times, with players that seem to struggle to get past the first few matches and with those I see working hard on getting better to give them some confidence. Even so, there is an issue with throwing a game because the opponent can end up thinking they won because you let them. I would not want that myself, I don't view as win as a win no matter what. If I play bad and win, I am not too happy since I did not take the win, I was handed it through mistakes by the other player, or by luck or whatever reason aside from me playing well. I actually got pissed as some league team that won because my team mate scratched on the 8 ball several times when the other guy barely made 4 balls the whole set. They were acting like the just won Oscars for winning a game that was handed to them LOL
 
I have only read the OP post so far before reading everyone's response because I wanted to give you my thoughts before they possible change reading what others have said.

We run a local bar box 8 ball tourney every Tuesday for $5 & it's race to 1, double elimination. Usually get between 8-12 players per week. Mostly the guys that shoot in the Thursday in house league.

The same guy usually wins I'd say about 85% of the time. But we would never ask him not to play. In a race to 1 it's not a guarantee to win. Plus if he loses it gives the winner a feeling of accomplishment.

Just 2 nights ago, there was only 10 players & it went so quick I ran a 2nd tourney right after with 7 guys & the above mentioned guy won both tourneys that night.

Anyone just my thoughts, there isn't a need to sit out or not allow so.eone to play especially since it's so cheap.
 
Well, I was going to sit out, then my son said "why do you think you are so good that you need to sit out, I have won it several times in a row before and others are as good as you are", that little jerk LOL

I got there Tuesday, and there were 24 players! Normally a good turn out is 12-16. Several of them are decent players that have a chance of winning equal to any of us, so I played.

Got 3rd and only lost the hotseat match because I missed an 8, then two tough 9 balls. Dang 9 kept going to the far rail with the 8 on the opposite side and I kept getting just too much cut on the 9 for a good shot. Race to 3 then 2 on the losers, lost 2-0 my next match, again, missed a 9. Oh well, at least I did not win :smile:
