Hey Guys,

this question is purely hypothetical and so is the situation.

lets say you are in a Tournament, League, Game Situation and you have just Tied your High Run(Which you havent come close to in a long time) or pocketted the 99th ball on your way to the elusive 100. And 1 Point away from winning the Game/Tournament. You ask your opponent if you go for it, can you continue to shoot to see where the run will end !

Your opponent only needs 1 Point to win said match !

Do You :

A - Sinch The Shot to set new high
B - Go For break shot, even if missing it could cost you match
C - Duck and play safe and wait for your next turn to win the match

Just trying to be creative and pick your brains !

Only one point to both win the match and set new high run? Cinch the shot!

Steve:

You didn't say what the race was to, but your comments about 1 point away from winning the match seems to indicate the race is to 100.

If the race was to 100 (e.g. as in a league situation), I'd certainly go for cinching that shot for both the win and the high run. In fact, that shot you show below -- with the object ball on the center spot and the cue ball on the center line in the kitchen area -- is a shot I practice, because it (or slight variations -- the center line line-up being the common denominator) rears its head a lot. I usually hit these with authority, to have the cue ball go one cushion into the pile. But on this shot, I'd just cinch it. Match, and high run, all in one fell swoop.

If the race were higher (e.g. to 125 or 150), depending on how I'm hitting 'em that day (I don't mean length-of-run-wise, I mean difficulty-of-shot-wise), I might go for the break shot, or I might safe. I wouldn't let my horse blinders of the high run get in my way -- the match is more important.

Hope that helps!

Race is to 100, but like i said it is for game/set/match and you have already asked you opponent if you could keep going if you made it....

who knows you are hitting them real good and the sky is the limit on when the run will end.....

Btw: you have only ended up where you have due to a bad roll, such as a skid effecting the end path of the CB

I'm suicidal this way. I'd probably go for the shot and the breakout! :p

Maybe this is why I haven't been doing so well in my 14.1 league! :p

I go for the safe. Since I have to spot a lot of people in our 14.1 league 90 balls going to 125 I have developed a very cowardly approach to actual games of 14.1. I like to keep the high run for the match under 14 whenever given the slightest opportunity and the risk of missing as close to none as possible. People keep telling me how that isn't going to work. I keep ducking and winning so we'll see in the long run. I've only lost 1 match in the last 30 so i'm sticking with my cowardly ways.
