Played in a 14.1 Qualifier last night

Ozone is coming to O-town (Orlando, FL) soon, 8, 9, 10-ball, 14.1, juniors, Seniors, Amateurs and Pros.

I was in the grocery store last night when a buddy called to say there was a 14.1 qualifier in about an hour.

I don't play 14.1, no one around here does, but I love to compete and thought it might be fun. Races to 50! Yikes! But still, pressure and competition.

I signed up and had a blast. I finished 3rd (more on that in a sec).

First round was rough, I played the TD, and missed or scratched from odd angles the first 3-4 times I was at the table. I settled down and cruised to about a 50-28 victory.

Second match I played an older (55?) lady who knew her stuff. She had a real touch in breaking things out and nudging things where she wanted them. She certainly showed me a thing or two about safeties and the rules.

Still I struggled to an ugly 50-22 win.

Then I played probably the best player there and we were both struggling. I was guarding a slim lead, playing smart on tight tables, up about 40-36. He missed a ball at 40-42 and lucked me safe, frozen to the pack. I tried a "wired combo" and ended up jarring it, losing 40-50.

Fourth match I was stuck 22-16 and broke out for a 31, which is good for me, and I had a decent break shot to finish up, but I rattled it and again, won 50-25. I know it would have only been a "34 and out" but in a race to 50 that's not bad and lemmee tell ya... I could taste it! The prospects of "running out" even that little bit had me pretty excited.

During that match the funniest thing happened; he slammed a ball AT a hole, missed it and it went 3-4 rails and back into the called pocket. Ok, that's weird, and I have only seen it happen one other time like 20 years ago (same room 14.1 ladder in 1989). The CRAZY thing is, this guy did it twice to me in about 5 minutes.

So, then I am playing to get another shot at the favorite, and hopefully my revenge. I am not playing great, but slowly cruising away, and up about 38-30, about to shoot my break shot, get my 12 and leave him sitting. My opponent then announces that, oh by the way, this is handicapped, he's getting 15 on the wire, and only needs 5 to win.
Yeah, flagged me, I jarred a key ball, and I lost 50-46. :frown:

Still I got to play 5 (Short) games of straight pool, and had a blast.

Good stuff! Thanks for sharing! Sounds like you had a great time with our favorite game!

Games to 50 though, ouch!

Yeah, they felt like races to 3 in 8-ball.

The highlites were that I got to play 14.1 in a tournament, and had a good run (for me and for match length) of 31/ 50.

The lowlites, were the "announcing" a handicap after the game was well underway, and only 5 balls short of the goal.

I also had an opponent I beat (not specifying which one) who was all hugs and smiles when it was close, then once I got up roughly 40-25 and it looked like I might close it out, the Earl like rants started, to the point I ran down to my last ball, got straight in on a hanger, and stopped to ask if we could play the set over.

31 is a decent run for a guy who doesn't play 14.1.

I posted a video in a different thread on this forum of Archer running 120 with Varner watching and commenting. You can pick up a few tips from watching that. He doesn't play any safeties, just running balls, but still interesting as he and Varner discuss it.

Congratulations on finishing 3rd.

The lady that you played was Helene Caulkin, and yes she definitely can play.

I was amazed at how many people really didn't know or understand the rules to straight pool - but despite all of that, everybody had a great time. I got recruited to clarify the rules.

Questions about jump cues, where the balls go in certain situations, how to rack, fouls, etc, etc, etc... The referee thing just ain't my cup of tea - but I sure did get some interesting and funny questions. LOL

The 10 Ball qualifier is tonight.

David,

You didn't play?! I thought 14.1 was your game?

I showed up to play, but this was a handicapped qualifier for A, B, & C players. I will play in the qualifier on July 23rd at Fast Break.

Nope, I look nothing like my avatar. lol

If I get a chance, I might stop by to watch ten ball and knock some around.

1o-ball didn't happen.

Only like 6-7 guys showed up, and it worked out to be a $30 entry and a race to 3. Too steep and everyone kinda just walked away.

If they made it a race to 7, double elim, I'd play just to play some 10-ball. Hell, start the thing earlier than 845pm and we could go to 7.

Well, more qual's coming up.

I didn't make it out there. That was the night that we has the bad storm and the tornado. That probably had a lot to do with the low turn out.

$30 is kind of steep, but remember... The entries collected from the qualifier is what pays the winner's way into the event. If a low number of players show up, the entry has to be increased.

Either way, its a good deal, and a great opportunity to get a chance to play with the world's best.

yup, and if it were races to 7 double elim, I would get to play some for my $30...

Otherwise, races to 3 feel like a weekly bar tourney, with no payback except the winner.

I WANT to play. I just don't wanna flip coins.

I hear ya... a race to 3 ain't worth it.

As it stands now, I won't be able to play in the one at Fast Break this week due to work.

I talked to Adam the other day and he's in the same boat - we can both play in the 10 ball, but not the 14.1. It's kind of difficult for me to make it out there on a week night.

Life goes on.

I may go try playing the one at FB. I just like the competition, the venue and the game are secondary.

Funny thing is, after my big "31" in 14.1 I actually ran 33 balls in rotation yeaterday, a 4-pack with one 6-9 combo. I've felt kinda "stuttery" lately, but maybe I'll pop out and start playing right soon...

yeah, you know you're a great 14.1 player when your high run is in 9-ball. LMAO
