Played with my Gus today

I break with my Gus with no concerns. I don't own a break cue - I am bad enough that I like the perceived help of not switching cues during a game.

Break cues can give todays players an advantage but since I'm from the era where nobody used them and I'm a wee bit lazy, ;), I find myself leaving mine at home when I go out and play.

The only break cues I ever liked were my Hightower and a Cuetec. They were both admittedly great. But I like just carrying a 1x2 case with one butt and one shaft.

I have a couple of Gus cues. As you might guess, they both play great, but the Hoppe Gus at 57" is a freak of nature. It plays incredible.

I would put it up against any cue as far as playability. But again it is so subjective, I had a friend tell me he couldnt play with a 57" cue, and wouldn't even hit with it.

I break all the time with the Gus cues, (I mostly play one pocket, so power break isnt in effect)

Had an opportunity to take my newly acquired Gus out for a REAL test drive. It did not disappoint .. I didn't have to adjust in any way. Played some 9 ball for 3 hours and I even broke with it every rack!:shocked2:... Hit/broke REAL good..Of course.. Nice :yeah:

Sweet.

The 2 Gus cues I hit with were both very nice but very very stiff. Maybe not SW stiff but close. Is that true of yours? Is that the hit you prefer?

When I first got my Gus I tried it out with the previous owner's 'primary' shaft. It sucked - I was relieved, as it meant I could sell it with no qualms.

Then one day I took out shaft #2 (also 12.36) and it was a different ballgame - nice stiff shaft, perfect balance, perfect feel from the ivory joint. The difference was obviously the tip, which when inspected was a different make from the one on shaft #2. The Tascarella I just sold is the only cue I've owned that hit like this Gus - I can't speak highly enough of Tascarella cues, and I'm sure I will own another one in the near future. For the money I don't think they can be beaten.

I would agree with the previous poster that Gus cues hit very stiff; however, there is a slight softness about them that SW cues don't have (I have owned 5 SW's). I'm a huge SW fan so not sure I can say a Gus hit better. Also, I have only hit with an ivory-joint Gus - no idea what the SS ones feel like.

Mine is stainless. Both shafts original and long tapered and now with new old stock triangle tips Barry put on and kept high as he does normally. I wouldn't say the cue plays "stiff". It just hits good. I normally play with a custom full slpice cue Keith made for me which ironically has a SW looking joint but is piloted!.. I dont have to adjust in any way using either cue. I have a couple of Pete's cues as well and I know how well they hit. This Gus belongs in the same conversation.. Gus/Barry know what they're doing.

Congrats on your new purchase. That wood must be really dry and stable now after all this time, and yes, really good quality cues don't warp by breaking with them.
I used to own a Jerry McWorter cue for three years, broke regularly with it (before 9ball rule changes, full break but no shaft bending during the shot), shaft stayed dead straight.
Hard hitting cue, the kind of you need to be in good shape to play with, but with absolutely predictable reaction to every shot.

I've never used a break cue in my life... but then, I've never made a ball on the break in my life, either. But that's another story altogether. :o

Congrats on your Gus....
Yes sir, Szamboti's.... my Gus hits real stiff, which I like... the two shafts sound like what you describe, sort of a 'pro' taper, but real stiff... stick draw with this cue is no problem!
Stainless joint also (my preference)... my normal player is a plain four point Scruggs, which is pretty close, but man, when I play a little with the Gus... = HOME:cool:
