Player Opinions Wanted (thinking of starting a 1P tournament)

Jay, I completely understand your concern, but IMO implementing a rule like this impacts the game's strategy far less than spotting balls on the footline if "X" number of balls fall in the kitchen, or worse, above the side pockets!

3andstop, This point that you made is 100% correct.

Certainly for gambling purposes the extra balls represent opportunities to move, but lets face it, when you spot someone 10 - 8 and the breaks, how is that one pocket? :)

I believe that one of the things that draws folks to tournaments is the ability to play some rounds even if they don't really have a chance to take home the prize money.

Shortening the game can afford some time to extend the sessions which will at least give folks time at the table. It still would allow players to move balls to the other end without "in effect" canceling the game by putting them back on the foot spot.

Nothing you do to change a game would render it the same game.

Even a time clock would affect the game far more than it would 9 ball or even 14.1 since 1 Pocket is so much a thinking game. Just like speed chess isn't chess, setting a time clock to 1 Pocket only extends the better players edge and changes the game.

I suppose there's a lot of ways to look at it. Just an idea. :)

Okay in that case, YES YES YES YES. I do like your debating skills.
I've actually seen One Pocket matches where they are playing games to ONE!

3andstop, I think making it a 6-6 race is just removing way too much edge from the better player. I'm not even sure how I feel about the spot balls after X are in the kitchen rule. I'd really like to run a tournament where the better 1P player who played the best 1p won it.

I think making it handicapped would help. I don't like the thought of you worring about removing too much of the edge from the better player. There are a lot of us new one pocket players who want to play the game but why play in a tournament where we know its 2 and out, give us a spot, doesnt have to be a lot but it needs to be something, 1 or 2 balls, again, only if you know them ect....

The game is not going to grow if you only want to beat up on the new guys trying to learn a great game.

You cant learn the game if you dont play better players. A tournament is a cheap way to learn.

No handicaps.
On a side note, I promise you if you start playing in open events on a more regular basis, and take it seriously, you will get a LOT better, fast.

AZE, You remember the last big 1p tournament at Sharpshooters? It was round robin , race to 1, top two players out of each group advances to a final round robin, with the final bracket doing another race to 1 round robin and it was fairly popular with the participants. That event was $25 entry, I think SS added some money and it ran pretty smoothly. The shorter race handicaps the game some for the lesser players who cant imagine beating Monster John in a race to 3 but anything can happen in a race to 1.

A regular double elimination event is good too and you have a number of good suggestions in this thread. For a regular event that has no added money, I would say that the entry fee will definitely affect your chances to draw a field in South Florida. $45 and the B players who like to dabble in 1p will likely stay away and watch instead. $25 and you might have them play. The lower entry fee will unfortunately affect your chances to draw the better players like Prince out of the woodwork.

Added money changes everything but I would understand if getting added $ in South Fl might be tough right now. I think alot of folks are hurting right now, and getting them to ante up $500 with no ROI is like getting soft $25 a game 1p. Not much around.

Yeah it's a tricky spot. I definitely don't want to make this a handicap tournament, or any format that reduces the chances of the best player winning - that's the beauty of 1P, if you play better you should win most of the time... Else I would just run a 9-ball tournament.
I personally wouldn't play in any 'handicap' one pocket tournaments. I don't need the money that any of those events could offer, and winning a handicap tournament just has a tainted feel.

I'm going to be looking to get some money added, and if worse comes to worse I may just pony up a few hundo to get it rolling.
I could even just play in the tournament myself and advertise that as added money :grin-square:

I've still got to figure it all out, hopefully I get some help soon.

Big thank you to everyone in this thread who suggested, and keep them coming.

lmao good one AZE. The $45 added AZE 1p event. :-)

Id bet anything you could get Charles or Woody to send it in some on the added end. remember last Dec Woody added in 500 to the 9ball tourny at SS? Margie or Joe Penna would also be good candidates to hit up. PM me if you get this rolling, I want to play in it for sure.
