Players with Jobs at the US Open

I'm curious as to the percentage of players who played in the US Open who have a real job vs those that play for a living.

I'll venture a wild guess that less than half (100) of the 250 entrants have jobs. I'm not counting those that work at the pool hall 15 hours/week or other small odd jobs as working.

That's an interesting question. I'm not sure we will ever be able to tell. That's a lot of work to figure that out. Looking at the top 100 finishers I'm guessing 80% of them are playing full time. After that, I have no idea. It sounds like there are a lot of shortstops and below that make up the remainder of the field. I would think most of them are working some sort of a day job. But that probably includes those working 15 hours a week at the local pool hall like you mentioned.

I would like to know how many of them actually have careers.

Maybe this is something the U.S. Open team could ask when people sign up. It would be an interesting piece of information to track.

Maybe less than half have jobs, I don't know. But a guarantee you that way less than half earn a living playing pool. ;)
