I messed up my shape on the 8-ball a little bit and decided to shoot the 8-ball with high inside english to sent the cueball down table 'in case' I missed. Would other have done this or been confident that the game was over?

I...of course rattled the 8-ball then my weak opponent made a 'master' like clean up of the table.

Personally, I would have cut it in with top right... hitting the ball just a little harder than pocket speed..... This does 2 things for you...

1. makes the long cut easier, and
2. sends the cue ball 2 rails back and forth, which would probably leave a combo on the 2 balls your opponent had left...

having said that... i expect to make the cut on the 8 ball, not having to get shapes... Committing to making the 8 is you main concern...
And playing the more natural shot also leaves your opponent tough if you happen to miss

if im playing my confident game, yes i would have done the same thing. if i have any doubts about it whatsoever, then im going to bank the 8 cross side softly. leave the cue ball on the other end of the table. trying to get the 8 close as possible to the pocket, if not make it. this way you leave a bank for your oponent. if his last 2 balls are far enough apart its gong to leave him a dificult time getting shape on the other ball. if he misses, more than likely you have an easy shot on the 8, where you put it a minute ago.
just my 2 cents,
Jay

High Inside

Hoping that I set the diagram up as you saw the play, I would do this.

High inside, carrying the cue ball up table and playing the 8 cross side. This will leave distance to your opponent.

CueTable Help

If you miss, the 8 will still be in the middle of the table. Hard for him to "duck" in this situation.

A second option I would consider here, (if i didn't like the cut) is to bank the 8 ball to the bottom left corner with right hand spin... at pocket speed..

leaving the cue ball frozen or close to frozen to the 3 ball.... leaving no shot

2 ways like this have won me many matches in similar situatins

again I like my previous option best.... but this would work if you aren't confident in the cut

Instead of trying to take the CB one rail to the center-line of the table, I would have gone back and forth instead, allowing me to use a less tentative stroke on the 8. Same "in case I miss" position, but higher percentage of hitting the 8 accurately for me.

But in response to your question, on a reasonably tight table, I'm always thinking about "in case I miss" when deciding how to shoot a shot like this. You should never take a shot for granted, and also playing position on the shot makes it feel more natural. Every other shot in the rack, you're playing position. Psychologically, it helps to play position when you're shooting the 8 as well. And if you're playing position anyway, put it somewhere where the opponent won't like it if he happens to get back to the table.

Of course, once you're down on the shot, you should only be focusing your brain on your aim, speed, and tip placement, just like on every shot. You should not be thinking about missing, because we all know what usually happens when we do that.

I see 2 shots how about the the kick in the side with the cue ball up table. And the cross side bank is a safety shot as well. Shooting the 8 up table you need to aim for the left corner of the pocket because if you touch the rail it never goes. Any loss of confidence will resort in a loss. Did you stroke the 8 ball shot ? You need to shoot with a rythum every shot especially the winning shots when you need to come with the shot and end game mark

Unless the shot is a definite 100% "can't miss", it makes complete sense IMO to play position. How many 8 or 9 ball shots have we missed due to a lapse in focus? In the shots you made to get you there, you focused on both pocketing and position. Makes sense to me to keep up the same level of intensity on the "Money Ball", as well as covering your butt if you happen to rattle the pocket. Just don't let "postion" focus overwhelm the "pocket" focus. And we've all done that a time or two.

My shot was kinda 2-way....but I missed my chance to win. Even against the best players in my league I woulda been a favorite to win after I missed. Thanks for the suggestions...
