Hello All! So I was told this was the website to get all my pool questioned answered, so here goes. Someone approached me recently and asked if I had every considered playing in tournaments. I said no, but it made me realize that I would love to try, but I don't know how to get involved. I just moved to NYC and I would love to know how I could get started, what tournaments are out there, etc. Any information would be very helpful. I know that being a girl, there is more room for amateurs to get out a make their mark. Any help would be greatly appreciated! THANKS!

99.99% of pool halls have local weekly 8 or 9 ball tournaments. Entry fees vary from $5 to $10 and are usually double elimination. This is usually your best way to start. As the bartender or a local person that is always there, they can answer for you.

They may not be allowed to play. The WPBA players were told they cant play in Reno or the DCC. They can only play in officially sanctioned events. In order to get sanctioned the tournament would have to pay a fee to the WPBA and there may be other requirements as well

I was wondering about Karen and the Joss events. If things are consistent, they shouldnt be allowed to play in the Joss either. I think it sucks. The Players are broke enough as it is.

I play in a league up here once a week. Thanks for the advice though. :D

I have played most of my life, just not seriously. I guess I could say I have played in tournaments before. I played for my college team and place in the SEC tournament, so I can play, but I would like to improve my game. Like better learn English shots and cue control. I'm a visual learner who likes a challenge so I thought tournaments might help. I'm also young and living in NYC so the funds are limited, but I wouldn't mind paying small entrance fees in order to gain that experience. I guess I'd just like to play more often and learn as much as I can. I really enjoy the sport.

What league do you play in? The APA is currently running a bunch of qualifier tournaments for the regional tournament in March. The competition is pretty good and it's definitely good experience.

I play at ABC on the Upper West Side. Do you have other information about the APA qualifier?

Thank you for clearing that up. Karen and Julie have earned so much respect for playing in the Joss events when their schedules allowed, it has done wonders to promote pool all around. Pool players should be able to play in any event. I am partial to the Joss obviously because there are no favorites or seating. You get what the true draw allows not because your a member.

Nostroke,

Mind what you type! No WPBA player has ever been told they couldn't play in an open tournament and you know it. Even though the player contract reads so. Monica and Helena should be playing as Karen and Julie will if it is on there calendar. Ga Young and Jeannie should play too. LOL

The WPBA has a very liberal policy on the issue because it would violate the Federal right to work laws. You wonder why my pro friends tell me not to take part in the forums? It's because people don't know what they are talking about. You of all people should know better as you support the New York ladies.

Cheers,

Harry I dont make this stuff up. I was in Albuquerque with the ladies this past weekend. There were quite a few discussions about it. Players were told the WPBA is now cracking down on their "existing policy". One player told me she specifically asked about Reno (she already has tickets and her entry paid) and was turned down and another asked about the DCC and she was told she could not play in that either. I suppose everyone could have misunderstood, but that is what many many players were saying. I hope i am wrong

"How can a pool tour on which most of the members don't make expenses let alone enough to live on say the members can't play in an open?

I asked the same question of a past WPBA president and the reply was something along the lines of.

"The WPBA has built the brand and made the ladies valuable commodities and therefore they are not going to just let any tournament cash in on what they have built"

This may be somewhat true for the upper echelon players but still, take the Joss Tour.Do they really derive a huge benefit when Karen and Julie play?. Many venues find thay cant even charge admission at all no matter who is playing . I dont believe Mike Z would ever pay a sanctioning fee no matter how small.

I think the benefit is much more to the WPBA when some of the spectators and even players learn "hey these women can play". This grows interest in the sport and this is what the WPBA may now be throwing away.

There certainly was no financial return for the DCC last year when a then relatively unknown Sarah Rousey entered. When she finished 20th out of 300 plus men though, the WPBA stock had to rise.

I think the women got this one backward. Hopefully this is a trial balloon they are floating which will quickly deflate. Maybe Karen and Julie didn't ask and will just play this weekend. This could start the deflation.

If not, the course of action you describe or something along similar lines seems necessary.

I dont know it will happen though-I have seen the men players not even get paid and everyone moans but no legal action is ever taken.

Nostrok.

The WPBA didn't make Jeanette, Monica and Tiffany great players. Jeanette, Monica, and Tiffany make the WPBA a great show.

At the risk (certainty) of appearing like a jerk but wanting to keep the record straight and not wanting to hurt anyones feelings, recent information i have received indicates that perhaps the 2 ladies that asked for permission to play in Reno and DCC- did not receive it- but were not 100% turned down either.

I am happy to report that Julie and Karen showed up to play in the Joss event today! So apparently things have not changed all that much. Karen is still on the winners side, beating Mike Davis 9-6 in her last match. She faces Mike Zuglan tomorrow in the semi finals of the winners side. Julie is out finishing in the top 16 i think. She lost two hill hill matches. Santos and Ginky are the remaining unbeaten players.

If I were you, I'd enter a small tournament at your local pool hall, most of them have $5 or $10 weekly tournaments. I'd also find out when and where the next invitational or open tournament is and go there as a spectator. If you are a visual learner as you say, this would give you an opportunity to see some very good players giving you an abundance of visual knowledge. It will also give you a good idea how you rank against some of the better players. You'll have a much better idea of where you are in relation to the local players and the better regional players. Good luck!

Thank you Rick. That is very good advice! I guess the best place to look for when the next Open will be in my area is the Tournament forum?

Sure. That is a pretty good source. As you get more familiar with your local poolhall and the people there, as you start conversing with the people that run the poolhall and some of the more serious players, you'll be able to get information from them as well. Good luck Pretty in Pool and don't forget to have a lot of fun out there whether you become a serious player or not.

You have to be a current APA member and playing on a team in order to play in the qualifier. The current APA season is almost half-way done so it's too late to join. But, the next season will start some time in January. PM me if you're interested in joining, my team might need a player next season.

Does the ABC play out of Amsterdam? How do you like that league?

I hope you are wrong too. What would be the point of being in the WPBA if you can't play where you want to. Is it all about pool or is it about stupid politics of the greedy kind??

Phyllis

Glad to be an amature
