Playing pool with a Snooker Cue

On my usual random youtube browsing, I happen to catch this old match between Steve Davis and Earl Strickland

Match

Anyway, I noticed Steve Davis is playing with his snooker cue. He even breaks with it. I was always under the impression that playing pool with a snooker cue would damage the cue since regular pool balls are larger and heavier.

I currently play with a 11.5mm tip, so I'm not too far off. That's why I found this interesting. Always curious about trying a smaller tip for the hell of it.

Thoughts? Wouldn't the weight of the brass ferrule deflect more? etc.

We have a very good player on our team shoots with a snooker cue , most of the time , 8 ball . he dont break with it , but he gets great action on the cue ball .

The cue doesn't look like Steve's snooker cue.
Seems to be almost 12mm...his snooker cue is less than 10mm.

The British brass ferrules tend to be very thin-walled...they deflect
less than an ivory ferrule...at least the ones I've hit with.

that cue davis used to use is a parris cue made for american pool. it's sort of a halfway snooker/pool cue. the tip is bigger than a snooker cue (though still small for american pool) and the ferrule is not brass, it's some kind of phenolic type material. but the shaft is ash, and it's 3/4 jointed

i know since then davis has switched to a newer parris pool cue that is less snooker like. it's half jointed, maple shaft, standard white ferrule. it's got a bunch of colorful butterfly splices on it. the tip is still on the smaller side, not sure what the exact measurement is. maybe 12mm? shaft looks like it still has a pretty stiff euro taper.

tony drago also has a snooker style pool cue from parris. 1/2 jointed, ash, but with a white pool ferrule and larger tip than a snooker cue.

i also remember UK player mark gray playing with a hybrid snooker/pool cue.

i tried playing pool with my brass ferruled snooker cues a few times. it's workable, but i found hitting the heavier balls to be a bit jarring with that kind of cue.

That's why I love this forum. Very interesting and good info.

Whenever I head to the pool hall, I used to joke to the worker about taking the snooker cues from the behind the counter and playing 3 cushion with them.

Now on the same token, I've seen someone play 9 ball with a carom cue. I would figure that shouldn't be much of an issue. Thoughts on that?

i saw blomdahl play pretty good 9 ball and beat efren reyes playing with his carom cue. i play some 3c and have several carom cues. you can definitely play well with them, but they're not the optimal tool for the job. the tip size is on the smaller side, but not out of the range for pool. the shorter length could cause reach problems on some shots. i think the main thing though is that the taper of the shaft is made for hitting the bigger heavier carom balls and it's just too stiff for pool balls.
