Brown phenolic rings are not always what you might think. Phenolic is manufactured primarily to be used as an electrical insulator. A use that ins't really that color sensitive. As a matter of fact, the brown phenolics that you have seen are actually the "Natural" color when phenolic is made. This natural color also varies widely from manufacturer to manufacturer and from batch to batch.

Any more even black, with consistent quality and color, is getting hard to get. The primary supplier stopped making it last year.

If you're needing a material for a specific repair, I'd recommend posting a picture. What you call chocolate may be referred to as something else by others.

If you're building something from scratch, then just look for a natural that you like. And buy enough of it to last as you probably won't be able to buy any that will match later.

Good Luck!
