Pleasures of Small Motions

Tough read, but worthwhile

Yes, it is definitely one tough book to read.

But, having pushed myself through it a few pages at a time, it definitely made its mark on me. I'm now working through it for the second time.

Make the effort.

I think the book's a good read. Probably takes 2-3 reads to let everything sink in. Think about though, if Fancher had thrown in nothing more than the typical "mental talk" about pool, i.e. "stay focused", "one ball at a time", "imagine you're in your practice room", it would have been really shallow and not worth much at all. He's digging beyond that.

Reading and understading the book can only help your overall game in some way.

A co-worker of mine found a copy of the book in the streets after Katrina. It sat in the road for weeks along with a APA 8 on the Break National Championships patch. The book cover is all beat up and damged but the pages are still readable. He gave it to me when he found out I love pool. Kinda a keepsake and memory of Katrina....

I purchased the book shortly after it first came out. It really helped me get past being rattled when playing a tougher opponent. I found it invaluable, and will never part with it! I too am currently going through a 2nd read on it.

I'm reading over it for the third time. I just cant absorb the information unless i give it my complete attention. Someday i'm going to have to sit down and read it all in one sitting. It has helped my mental game a lot though. My brother tried to read it and couldn't get past page 5. LOL.

I found this book too abstract to be of much use. Am I missing something?

Me too. I found "The Inner Game of Tennis" to be much more useful.

This book was a tough read. But the way i feel is that if you can get even one little thing out of any pool book that you can apply to your game, then it's worth the $15 that you spend on it.

Anyone who wants a copy for cheap can PM me. I have 4 extra copies (new) that came as part of a billiard collection.

The important thing to note about this book is that all of the information is based on research in sports psychology. I first read the book not shortly after I really got into practicing and applied as much from the book as I could understand at the time. Now its been a few years and after reading the book for the second time, I realize that it is THE best thing that's happened to my game. The last tournament I played in I could tell I had an advantage over most players just because of the mental game.

I encourage everyone who is serious about improving their game to study this book.

I just received my copy over the weekend, and have read maybe 30 pages. I think it's a good read, not too abstract for my taste, and pretty easy to follow along with. I'm looking forward to the rest of the book. .....Gerry
