Plug for St. Louis Pool...

What a great article.

Zim - Terry showed me the RFT last night at the poolroom but it was too much to digest with the ballgame going on.
I like this reading on the internet much better.
This writer was trying to corner me for the entire weekend of the tournament to get my views and input and I kept telling him - Talk to the young guys: Justin, Lars, Andy, etc.
I'm just an OldHasBeen who can only tell you about how it used to be - these kids can tell you HOW IT IS NOW.
I think what really got him to realize that he wasn't going to get anywhere with me was when he said "Can we sit down and talk for a while about what pool has meant in your life".
I said "Sure - "Order me a steak "medium" and we can go sit over there".
I never saw him again the whole weekend.

OHB- He called me a few weeks ago asking me for some info also. I too gave him a few local names (the ones used in the article) and didn't get to detailed with him.

I'll be at the Break sometime in the next week or so to drop off some flyers for the Gateway Amateur 9-Ball Tour!

I too like to read these kind of articles, maybe I'll try to get something in the RFT on a monthly basis.

Talk to you soon,
Zim

I'm completely surprised at many of the quotes in the article.

Things people usually don't say.......

I have to say one thing about the people of St Louis, you have to love the fans. For them to give a standing ovation after the game (not sure to which team  ) showed ALOT of class. My hat is off to the fans of the St Louis area!

The ovation was to the Houston Astros.....but not to the umpires, I can assure you that. St Louis fans also gave standing ovations to Sosa when he hit a home run back when he & McGwire were chasing Maris.

Zim,
GREAT article, many thanks.

In response to a request, here is a link to the thread I started on the Billiards Bullpen.

Willie- I too thought it was a great article, good quotes and an insight to what the future holds for these young players. I really liked the thread you posted about the Billiard Bullpen. You should make a trip back to our area and play in the Gateway Amateur 9-Ball Tour, bring some friends (not A players) haha! You know how to get a hold of me!

Talk to you soon Willie,
Zim

Zim,
Actually I am DEFINITELY planning a trip back this winter - and I'm bringing a friend (NOT an A player) who also wants a weekend with Mark. Perhaps we could arrange to be there on a Gateway Amateur Tour weekend - I am positive that Mark would approve of a little road trip. I will try to make this happen (I assume I can find a tour schedule on your website).

Willie if you come to St Louis for another lesson from Mark and you are eligible to play in the Gateway Amateur Tour (meaning you are not an 'A' player), I'll give you some action on a bar table. I am a 'C' player for life, you have the nuts.

Zim & Watchez,
What is this "A player" of which you speak???? Do you guys have a formal definition of this term?? The reason I ask is that I basically only play some 14.1 league play, and very rare 9-ball tournaments (once or twice a year). I wouldn't know an A from a Z player.

Willie, I see that you are from Indianapolis. Have you ever seen Muscle John play? Consider someone that he could give the 8 ball to on a bar table an 'A' player. What is your high run in straight pool? This makes me remember a story. My good friend Lil Ricky Van Uum was once barred from a local tournament when the person running the tournament stated that he was a AA player & couldn't play. He looked her straight in the eye & said, "First of all I am insulted you called me a AA player"

Willie, I'm a Z player, I thought you knew that...lol. Watchez, were you at the first GWA9BT?

Nope, I wasn't there. I heard it was Andy Quinn's place & was too scared I might have to play him or one of his protogeges. When I learned that Andy wasn't allowed to play, I still didn't like my chances. I am waiting for Zim to come out with the Gateway Amateur 'C' 9 Ball tour. Or maybe even the Gateway Amateur 'C' One Pocket tour. At least in one pocket, if you miss every other shot you most likely have a chance to shoot again in that game.

Rankings don't mean much..............

I became convinced of this when last year, My 20 year old Son Tommy tried to get into a local weekly $10 tournament at a poolroom on Gravois. He was told not just NO - BUT "Hell NO". Now my son couldn't run a 6-ball rack with 50 tries.
It seems that the person running the tournament said, "If Your Name & Driver's Lic says Your Tom Ferry - You Aren't Allowed To Play.
