Watching the shot again, would like to mention that in order to draw the cue ball and get shape avoiding the scratch two rail into the middle pocket, one would really need to hit the 8 full anyway (just missing the point going in). A miss is a miss is a miss - the fact alone that an ball hit parallel along the rail may go in if one just trickles it in doesn't change the fact. Having said all this, I'm not sure I'd not preferred going forward two rails with inside (lesser chance of scratching into that same middle pocket even if one likes to get close to one's work).
