Everything makes a difference otherwise there is no difference. Of course pocket sizes and cuts and shelves and cloth and ball sizes make a difference.
All of it is variables and all variables affect the outcome. Statistically if balls that are waxed will go in more from the same angle off the cushion than those which are not waxed then it doesn't take a genius to understand that unwaxed balls equals more misses and more misses equals lower average runs.
And no, runs are not created equal UNLESS done under equal conditions. The 14.1 runs done at the high run competitions at DCC are a good comparison of skills whereas comparing Mosconi's 526 on a 4x8 with huge pockets is not a good comparison to John Schmidt's 400 on a Gold Crown 9ft with tighter pockets. The variables are simply too much to overcome to be able to say one is better than the other.
We have the 526 because it was a right time right place moment. If I were a high caliber player I would install a 4x8 with pockets exactly like waht Mosconi had and a video camera and spend my time trying to beat that run on that equipment so that I could claim the world record. I would not intentionally handicap myself with tighter pockets because at the end only the number matters to the people who write the record books.
