Hi all,

I have a question about pocket size. When a pocket is 5" (BUCKET), or 4 1/2" tight pockets, where are you measuring that? Is it at the tips of the points or the tightest part of the pocket where the self starts, I'm not sure? I here people talk about pocket size and type for that matter, put I'm not completely sure I know what they are talking about.

they're talking about the mouth of the pocket....tip to tip. the cut makes more of a difference though

If you can lock two balls in the jaws, they are considered tight.

That's how my home table is, its nice because the league tables you can pull 2 balls down easy. Makes for good practice at home.

Pocket size is important but I believe that pocket type is more important. The pocket opening is measured from point to point at the tips. The pocket type can mean several things.
1. Does the pocket angle go straight back or does it narrow back? If it narrows back the balls may not stay in the pocket.
2. How far does the slate go back past the pocket opening? If slate ends right at the pocket opening, it is called a "drop pocket" and accepts the ball very easily. If the slate goes back into the pocket farther, it is more difficult to pocket the ball.
3. The combination of pocket size, pocket angle and pocket length determine the overall difficulty.

One Pocket players usually have a good understanding of this---any comments to shed more light on this would be appreciated.

how to measure.

I usually measure a table by the way two balls fits through the mouth, but yes all of the things in the previous post about how deep the pockets are and the shape of them matter too.
