I disagree. I hate the pockets in the pictures on the right. They are too small, and the cut will make any ball hit at an angle with any pace rattle out. I dislike this because it takes away a significant number of shots from the table, and takes too much away from pool in my opinion. I would rather see and have the ability to hit shots at an increased angle with pace if needed, cheat the pocket, and make larger angled cuts, than rattle balls like these pockets will. Its a much more func game to play and watch in my opinion. I'm not saying i want 5" pockets, but 4.5" are tight enough to kep bangers from running out, but big enough to allow the game to be played aggressively.

I started playing a game called 3 5 8. It is basically shoot in any 8 balls, but you must bank your 3rd, 5th and 8th ball. All call shots and must be clean or balls get spotted with kitchen BIH unless there is no ball touched, then it is BIH anywhere.
That game can get pretty boring quickly being you can be shooting on your same shoot several innings in a row. When there is no progress in the game, it takes away from the fun. I know this and feel this, even though I am forcing myself to do it to force myself to start banking more and banking at stuff I would have never thought of trying.

In Vietnam, a majority of players play a local game, where players are dealt a certain a number of cards, they shoot the ball representing that card and gets rewarded for potting in the side pockets. That is how pool has been here, rotation games came later, that should explain how tables are made with such pockets, and actually widened over time. Pockets used to be even tighter.
But yes we had 5inch pocket tables, but they did not stay long, reason is clubs wanted to cut pockets to serve both games, local and rotation, so came the pockets now.
I hate that, I would love to see clubs with international standards here, which serve only one game, I hate the gambling local game, but "everybody's doing it"

what happens if the pockets too forgiving that players dont need to care for positioning?
cheat the pocket is of course a fun part of the game, but is it because of a poor positioning shot before that? as a greater challenge, I like the choices players have to make when they have are in a situation to compromise between accuracy, power, and positioning.
I believe what is more challenging is more interesting.
you can do that in any game, make the equipment tougher and tougher. the absolute best adapt and the others quit or give up before they had a chance to get much better..
make you home table anyway you want it. but the poolrooms need tables where the balls go in easily.
you guys go play at an old billiard parlor with 51/2 inch pockets for the sides and 5 inch corners. you can run lots of balls, play position like y ou never could before as the balls dont bobble if hit decently but not perfectly.
what you will find is new shots. like playing position for banks and playing banks you wouldn't shoot before as they were just sellout shots.
you will scratch a lot more so it helps make up for the easy pockets and easier to make long shots.
a newcomer can have fun as well and even play pool with a good player and learn something

those are billiards game, right? years back when there were more carom tables in Hanoi, I saw ppl play that a lot, now, much fewer carom tables in Hanoi. the game may still be played in HCMC.
