i like owning fancy cues, but i perfer to play with a basic cue, no points or 4 points, no inlays. I was playing with a fancy Barry Szam for a while this past year perhaps 6 months and I called Barry and asked him if he would fill in the ivory inlays or something-he didnt seem to happy-perhaps i'm the first person to ask him "Hey cover up those ivory inlays" I dont know. :) I would have kept playing with that cue but I needed a longer cue...

anyways since my most recent back operation where im positioned over the cue has changed and I had to go up to a 59" cue, so I'm using a 4pt Gus with rose wood prongs and butt sleve no inlays, It's a hell of a cue wow!!! I think I'm gonna stik with this cue for along time, unless I need more length, but I dont think so. I dont like changing cues-I hit balls with all my cues except one, but I dont "play" with them,

all of my cues can give me the 5 out, even the maids mop can:eek: :(

I figure if you can walk into most rooms and gamble with anybody you don't recognize from "billiard digest" without a spot, you're an A player.

Joe
This is an interesting definition of an "A" player and it makes sense to me.

I'm sure this has been mentioned before but I'm curious as to what you guys consider an "A" player to be?

Someone that is libel to get out at any time.
Someone that has run 8 racks or more of 9 ball at least 5 times.
(Plus at least 6-7 racks of 8 eight ball)
Someone that knows how to kick and bank 1-2-3-4-5 rails with 90%+ accuracy.

That is an 'A' player.

thats a pretty stiff criteria for a A player.

there are so many different things that make aplayer what he is that 3 or 4 letters will never be an accurate way to define a players skill, some guys fold up for the cash, or in tournments(me), or when alot of people are on the rail, when they play stronger players. The list goes on and on, some guys can only play with one cue-Hendrey the snooker player hasnt been right since his cue got broken in half. So to put a number or letter on a person is diffucult. In Sacramebto I never won a B tournment at the jointed cue-I played in it once took 4th and was barred from it, I have no shot at winning the open tournment there. I'm not a A player by those standards above, not even close. But I have the best of it playing any B player (assuming im healthy), But with my years of playing I dont get rattled or nervious playing anyone or for $$$, some guys do. In reality there are the champions and the rest of us. your one or the other.

If he's talking about an 8 pack or a 6 or 7 pack he's smoking crack

I know pros that haven't necessarily ran an eight pack. There's so much involved in it, getting the good breaks etc. If you can consistently beat the eight or nineball ghost or higher, then you are probably an A player when it comes to rotation games. In eightball it becomes a little more complex, and you could have run a fifteen pack in nineball and still be a b or even a c player at one pocket or 14.1.

It's soo difficult to truly rate a player that it's funny. The best I've ever done is a six pack and several five packs, but few people would say that I'm not an A player. When I'm playing seriously I'll play a safety when it's the best move so that will interrupt a run at stringing racks together and limits the number of packs you can do, so playing the ghost and or how many racks you string together isn't necessarily a good indication of a person's speed.

the best I have ever done is a 4 pack lots of times, the break awalys stops me. in 14.1 my best is 8 or 9 balls, how to clock someone at 1P???? I have ran 8 and out but was never a good 1P player now I'm horrible at it because I stopped playing it years ago-I forgot how to move, my 8 ball game jumped up real fast and i'm not an 8 ball player. I dont fold up for the $$$, I have played in maybe 15 tournments in my life and I get nervious and cant win a set. In the last Reno tournmant I got knocked out 9-6 by some guy I could beat easily but I was rattled, 10 minutes later on the exact table I started playing a $500 set and felt relaxed and normal, other guys play lights out in a tournment and a $500 set is to much for them, before I had $$ it still never bothered me, it brings out the best in me. I play Jay Helfert $5/game 8ball and lose but I get serious and bear down for $5 just like I was playing for $500/game, al this talk is about me, not to brag but show how complex i am as a player, and I believe that were all complex to some extent, which brings me to the point there is no way to judge how good someone really is, the situation is just as important as anything, on that note in Hardtimes I have never won a penny ever, I cant make a ball in that room, I used to go to Bob's billiards and never booked a loser. Some rooms I just cant play in others I play good in-and I dont know why.

Haha... I guess a lot of pros aren't even "A" players... Where do you guys come up with this stuff?

I recently posted about having ordered a new "player". That post is here if you'd like to see *my* reasoning about the "statement" my cue should make.

I know that I may make assumptions (we all know about assumptions) about how someone plays when they walk into a poolroom, based at least in part by the case they carry and what's inside.

Obviously for anybody "on the road", or even just getting local action from people they don't know, it may be an even larger issue.

Anyway, I'd like to hear the pool equivalent to the Golf Channel's "What's in the Bag" from my fellow AZ'ers.

Thanks,

Joe

I play with a JW and it can give me the wild 8 and the breaks. I've got other cues but just can't seem to want to put in the time to get used to them. It would be nice to walk around without having to worry about a 'collectible' but I've been playing with it for 25 years!!

Something about playing with a sweet cue helps keep me from turning into a dead carp on the side of the pond. :D :D

Ummmm Eric....I'm thinkin' you meant 8 or 9 racks? I know it's always a good idea to talk down your speed but, dude............:):p

haha nice catch.

Well, the GOOD news is I think Efren might qualify under this definition, although the kicking and banking 5 rails with 90% accuracy could still be a deal breaker, but there are LOTS of "A" players that won't meet those guidelines IMHO.

My cues are perfect- a chipped and worn out plain Schuler with the weight bolt and original bumper missing. My playing cue now is the old green predator sneaky where the points don't even come close to lining up.They play pretty good but look crappy so they fit me well :p

I've been using my leather case that's the same size as a Jack Justis, though, and I think it would fit a shortstop (or better) instead of my weak A game.

I love it when C players roll in for a tournement with Laaz Rocket cases and spend 10 minutes assembling their predator Bk2, their jump cue. playing cue, towel,etc... and then shank every third ball.
