Pooky/One hole/Thoughts...

JAM,
You would put Max as the best one pocket player in DC/MD/No. VA?

I would have to say either Gerry Slivka, Tom Wirth, or Keither. Do you think Max is better than these two?

I like Max's one-pocket game. Though he plays all games well, his one-hole game is phenomenal. Max and Keith did play even up one-pocket about 4 or 5 years ago in Baltimore, when Keith first came to the D.C. area. It was a long battle, but Max came out on top, getting backed by an endless bank roll. Keith ran out of dough.

Also, what's your opinion of Kevin "Lefty" Gardner (the young black player who frequents USA Billiards). I think he plays one hole pretty sporty.

I know "Left-Handed Kevin" well. He's been around the D.C. pool circuit for quite a long time. I think he plays solid one-pocket, the game of his choice. He taught me how to put throw on a ball when banking in the side, hitting the cue-ball harder than usual, using low inside english. He used to frequent Champions in Silver Spring, MD, when I used to work there, many moons ago. He was always in action, a pleasant guy to gamble with, and a gentleman on and off the table.

I saw Left-Handed Kevin this past Wednesday night make a cameo appearance at Orange Ball in Rockville, MD for the weekly $20-entry-fee Wednesday night 9-ball tournament. He didn't play in the tourney, but most definitely seemed to be checking out his prey.:p

I like Jerry Slivka's game. He breaks like a cannon in 9-ball and is capable of stringing racks together when he's on his game. I've seen him play one-pocket and bumps on several occasions. He comes out of the gate like a rocket, and if you can't stop him, you're dead.

Maryland Native Tom-Tom Wirth is heralded as one of the one-pocket greats in this area. However, he did take a hiatus from pool a while back and traveled the poker circuit. I have seen him recently back on the pool circuit, and I think he is tweaking his game back into shape, hoping to take a shot at some upcoming high-profile tournaments. His pool engine has been revamped!

JAM,

Are you and Keith going to Louisville next month?

Not sure at the time of this writing if I am going. January is a busy time of year in D.C. for the Federal Government, which means dollars in my pocket, but we -- key word here, "we" -- have not YET made a final decision. ;)

I think I met and saw Kevin play a few weeks ago (I think, but I'm not certain it's the same guy). Very strong 1P player, and a real nice guy, but from what I could tell, not quite at the level of the names being tossed about in this thread. Also, didn't Tom Tom do pretty damn good at the most recent US 1P Open?

I met and matched up with Kevin playing one pocket at USA Billiards over the summer, and we got along well.

Afterward he told me the story when "Frisco Jack" Cooney played Melvin "Strawberry" Brooks in DC 12 or 14 years ago and Cooney's wife Barbara got shot trying to leave with the money they'd won. Kevin was working the desk at the joint that night (I don't remember the name of the room).

I don't think Tom-Tom could give Kevin more than 10-8 at most.
