Pool, a Game of Skill, Legal to Gamble in TN

Same happened here in the 90s. Police said if they came in the pool room and saw pennies under the rails somebody was going to jail. So we all started using metal washers under the rails.

It was the same way in Atlanta. All the rooms had a rule. No money on the floor at all. You were allowed to have money out to pay the waitress or pay at the cash register. If you were seen with money out anywhere else, you were barred.

The cops even raided the old Johnson city tournament once. Hauled all the players off to jail. Minnesota Fats testimony in court was legendary. He got everyone released.

Gambling is a skill...

In Texas, I believe it is legal for participants to bet money on a pool game (or card game) with these two exceptions:

1) The "house" cannot take a cut of the money (which, as Macguy pointed out, being charged table time could be construed as such).

2) The venue does not serve alcohol. All gambling is illegal in an establishment that serves, or sells, alcohol. But, of course, one can buy all the lottery tickets one wants at the liquor store.

I also doubt that non-participants would be allowed to bet on the game. I'm sure there are other exceptions. It might also depend on local laws as well.

MMmmm this smacks of local and/or state ordinances. You can / can't bet on a game you are watching / the hall owner doesn't get any cheddar, but a gratuity is just fine for the excellent service. This is all just nit-nitty-nit-nitt stupidity IMO.

In my hall, we have police captains and detectives in action. No one says anything outside of "flip again?"

Legano, illegano.... è una zona grigia.

They don't frown on gambling in Lexington Kentucky pool halls...
...I played the sergeant of detectives 3-red snooker for $100 a game.
He was the best snooker player in town when Clyde Childress wasn't around.
