A Connellsville, PA woman was jailed recently after city police reported finding found her children, ages 3 and 6, wandering the parking lot outside Rumors Bar while she sat on the pavement crying over a broken six-pack of beer.
Added to a citation for public drunkenness and two counts of endangering the welfare of children, Monica Powell, 30, of 206 N. Cottage Ave., was charged with aggravated assault and disorderly conduct for allegedly attacking officers.
Police spotted the children at 10:30 p.m. March 19 outside the bar in 25-degree weather. The children were both crying and told police their mother drank too much and fell down, according to court records.
She was on the ground, police said, with her head covered, not watching the children.
"Powell was observed to be extremely intoxicated. She had glassy red blood-shot eyes and slow slurred speech," Ptlm. Michael Long reported. "She could not stand on her own and she had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on her breath."
Police said the children walked with Powell to the bar so she could buy a six-pack. But once there, Powell found some friends she wanted to shoot pool with, police said.
"Powell made the children sit in the hallway while she continued to drink and shoot pool," Long reported. "The children advised that their mother commonly takes them to the bar."
Powell was transported to Connellsville Police Department, where officers notified Fayette County Children and Youth Services. At the station, she allegedly tried to punch Sgt. Ronald Haggerty Jr. and pushed him.
"Substantial force had to be used to secure Powell and prevent her from assaulting (other officers)," Long reported.
She was arraigned by on-call District Judge Mark Blair in Uniontown and remanded to Fayette County Prison on $20,000 cash bond.
A preliminary hearing is set for 2:45 p.m. April 5 before District Judge Ronald Haggerty Sr. in Connellsville.
