Pool and family

I don't really qualify for this topic because I only have a 9 year old (dog) but, I just bought my wife a hot tub.....and she could care less about what I'm doing!:D

I'm Lucky

My kids are grown up and gone, my wife loves to play pool, I have a table in the basement, and we play almost every day. We also play on a league together on Tuesday nights. I must admit that getting out on the weekends has been a problem, however, we are working on it. I like to get together with my 1 hole buddies on Saturdays. Every Saturday is not gonna fly though. Such is life!

If you can afford it and you have the space why don't you think about getting a table? It doesn't have to be a 9 foot Gold Crown, just something affordable and at least you can shoot pool in the evenings or something. Anything is better than nothing.

I agree. I have two kids 5 & 2. At 8-9pm when they are asleep I will go to the basement to play pool for an hour or so. Not 5-6 hours a day like a lot of people play, but an hour a day is pretty good with kids :)

I'm in the same situation, with 2 boys, a 4 month old and a 25 month old. I must have an angel for a wife, as she lets me play 2 nights a week, and practice with my team for a few hours on Saturday. She realises I work hard, and need a "hobby". I do all mornings with the boys before work so that she can sleep in, I also do the cooking for 5 nights of the week and the shopping, so I supposes she feels I deserve it:o .

I am planning for a new garage with games room attached, and for when I can play with the boys, but until then I'm happy, and wouldn't change a thing.

All three kids are grown and gone now, but, when they were younger, at home, playing soccer, basketball, hockey, band festivals, etc. etc. They were the priority.

Good parenting when they are the age of your children is just beginning, I echo the sentiments of others that Family Come First!

Get a table at the house, it;s a great way to connect to the kids, create time for conversation and keep your playing eye. It also developes their love of the game and hopefully they will be as big a fan as you are.

I've got 2 1/2-year-old twins. It has been tough to find a balance, but I'm a little lucky in that I work nights (4-11), so I can squeeze in couple of hours 2 or 3 times a week after I get off, since everybody's asleep. I get to atone for that by being with them from breakfast till about 3 p.m., when I drop em at day care for a few hours before my wife picks them up around 6.

Only hitch is when I get caught up in things and am dumb enough to play till 3 a.m. ... then I'm up doing oatmeal and diapers 4 hours later, pray they want to take a nap in the middle of the day, fall asleep on the subway on the way to work anyway, struggle through the shift (no heavy machinery, at least), stir and repeat, lol!

But I've been cutting back lately ... it's spring, they need to get out more now, and I don't want to cheat my kids by being in a fog.

Yep...have already thought of that and am in the process of finishing a loft in my detached garage for a game room. Can't wait for that.

I agree the game room's the best solution. I've been working on one in my garage at our weekend place (no room in the city for that kind of thing). Room still needs a lot of work, but the kids love to fling the balls around on the table ... and I think they're turning into excellent rack mechanics already. Finally, a use for that stinking jump cue, too! They're good for 20 mins of chaos ... and I can slip down for a couple of hours in the evening and shoot, though I oughta be working more on finishing the %&*#@! room.

Gregg,

Beautiful post, Gregg. I guarantee you, when your child is 6 or 7 and you toss out those old baby toys and stuff, you will have a strange nostalgic feeling, and maybe a cry. The same will happen when they're 10 and they want a cell phone instead of a toy.

We all have fantasies about winning the big tournament, but being involved with and loved by your children as a father is the single most rewarding experience in a man's life.

Chris

Thanks, and yup, it goes by so fast.

Come on, try to be realistic.

Try getting a divorce, moving out of the house, and quitting your job, then you can dedicate the time you need to your game.;)

I am in the same boat, with a 18 month old.

The thing I remind myself is that pool will always be there for me. There will always be another ball, another rack, and another match to play. My child will only be young once. Once he is two, he will never be one again, so focus on what's most important to you in your life.

I get out once a week on Thursdays for league, Sunday night at my buddies house on Sundays, who lives blocks away, and once a month or so for "alternate" Tuesday night team.

Gregg,

What you say is so true. I have an eight year old that is growing so fast. Sometimes I think I should play this game or that with her. By the time I get arround to it she is to old. You are so right there will always be another game of pool but not another 1st word, walk or bike ride.

It is good to stay in the moment with kids. That is where you will find the most joy.

Don't dwell on the past or look to the future. It can make you crazy.

JMO

Regards,

Kevin

As said before; you can't win back time already lost. That's one of the reasons why i took my kids out to have a harleyride couple of years ago (they are now 7 and 5)..as a dad it's my job to show them what a biking is all about. My wife was just today out with our 7-year old to stop by in poolhall to get the little one her first lessons of pool. That's life...giving time and getting some nice memories back.

(OK, to be honest...one main reason that my wife is teaching pool to our kids is that she is way better than me...well, that's not a surprise for people knowing me)

I bought a table in 99, took out a pole, rocked and painted 3 walls and 1/3 rd of the ceiling done. Still that way! Don't feel bad bro.
