was over in another forum (ccb) and landshark was participating in a youth pool discussion,,,,said some pilot program was started in the Boys and Girls Clubs,,,,anybody know anything about this ? ,,,'cause if the Boys & Girls Clubs are gonna draw my younger players away, I may as well shut my doors now and escape the possible bankruptcy.

my place is in Kosciusko, MS, one block from what will soon be the "Oprah Winfrey' Boys & Girls Club,,,seems Oprah donated a wad of $ to her hometown for this project,,,people had told me there was not gonna be any
pool tables there,,,maybe they didn't know about this junior pool connection that landshark was talking about,,,,

I'm not signed up on ccb or I would have joined in,,,

I wouldn't sweat it. If they do organize a league they'll be developing your future. You can only play pool so long before you have to gamble ;)

But, I'll believe it when I see it.

hope you're right,,,if the economy doesn't take an upswing soon, I'm gonna close anyway,,,Mississippi is the first to feel the squeeze of a recession & we're in one right now,,,finally something Mississippi's first in,,,LOL

we're also the last to recover from an economic downturn, too !

I havent read the thread on CCB, Ill have to take a look at it. Only program I have heard of at a boys and girls club was from Jerry Brieseth. That is acutally how he got started teaching, he started a program working with the kids.

There's quite a write-up on the BCA web site including a phone number to call for more info. Let me know if you can't find it, and I'll go look for the page.

Hey Jack sorry it took me so long to reply to this...I've been kinda busy. Here is the article I was referring to. I did not do alot of research to find this link again, but when I was researching options last summer I came across this information. I swear that they started the program in 2000, BUT I have been wrong before, so most likely this is it.

I doubt that you will lose any customers, unless your current patrons are now active in the B&GC. Keep in mind also that this is only being done in one region. I imagine that the more urban the area the more active the kids will be. The B&GC in my area sucks...in a major way. I actually think the kids would be better off on the streets, lol. I was talking with the Executive Director about a year and a half ago about pool at the club. They have one table and like three cues...only one with a tip. I know a local cue builder and told her to give him a call...that he may be willing to donate the time and goods to make the cues playable. She never followed up on it. I doubt that she would follow up seeking out any type of grant or anything else to get the game going. It is a shame really...I would kill for her job. The only other option for those under 21 in my general area to play pool is the bowling alley (the table SUCKS!!!) and this one pizza place that has a table, lol. There is a B&GC in the next county that has some active pool going on, but nothing organized. I just don't think the general population knows about pool resources. I have a desire to help them, but people around here are so difficult and don't listen...it is useless.

I do hope the BCA gives us a follow up on how this program fared.

Boys Club

When I was a kid, 1959, all I could do was stand outside the bar door and watch. I joined the Boys Club in Alexandria, VA that had four tables. 9 footers. Two for the older guys and two for the kids. That inner city Club saved a lot of kids. If you wanted to fight, you put on the gloves, whipped or got whipped and shaked hands. Then they had dances. Hey, hey Paula. Man am I getting old or what. The Boys Club of America was a good thing then!!!!!

thanks, but if I ignore it, maybe it'll go away,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,LOL

I know you were joking, but I think you would be better to go the other direction. Talk to the boys and girls club and see if there is any way you can be involved. If they are going to be there anyway, it might do you good to participate and have everyone get to know you. That way you are building future business.

when the 'Oprah' Boys & Girls Club is completed,,,IMHO, it'll be the same as it is now, 'a cheap baby sitter, with a lot of older thugs hanging outside trying to pick up under aged girls',,,,,

probably won't lose many to the club,,,don't have the time to try anything positive with it; I'm open 7 days per week,,,tried to have a pool school on Sat mornings before (3 bucks per hour, open tables, snacks), but all anyone wanted to learn was draw, jump, masse !!,,,wish trick shots would disappear from TV,,LOL,,,,just have to wait and see.

Amanda's Gameroom gets undue credit with bad things that happen, but no credit with good things it does,,,,JMHO

I learned to play pool in the mid 50's at a Boys Club in Phoenix, AZ and yes it was a good thing then. The guy who ran the wood working shop at the Boys Club helped me build my first cue when I was 12. I thought that if I had my own cue, I could beat all the other guys (and I did). And after the Boys Club, I started going to the pool room - was hooked on pool.

I grew up playing at the Boy's Club as well. They used to have tournaments that went all the way to the national level back in the 1970's. Cisero Murphy ran his "Pool in the Streets" program at a Boy's Club in Brooklyn. The Boy's & Girl's Clubs of America have long been a safe haven for kids to have after school & weekend activities. It kept me off the streets. If there wasn't a pool table at my local Boy's Club in Kearny, New Jersey, who knows what I would have done with all of my spare time.

Hey John, I got real lucky. When I was 14 they sent me to reform school. We had a 9 footer there also. Seems like every place I have lived has had a pool table, trains going by in the middle of the night, and a river. The reform school was probably the best thing that ever happened to me except for my wife.

Well sometimes I thought the pool room was "reform school". I was about 14 when I started going there. My Mom and the couple who owned the pool room had a deal. They watched and everytime I looked sideways, I got a lecture and "Jackie, we are going to call your Mom". Mom had it covered - so I couldn't get into trouble - probably got into more trouble at the Boys club. But it was nice to have someone watch your back - lots of gambling going on that I wanted to participate in.
