Is anyone familiar with the 32 person modified double elimination pool tournament charts? I think the APA may have used them.

This is the chart where the first two flights are double elimination. All flights after that are Single Elimination....

FTR, I am not interested in standard 32 man DE pool tournament charts.

We have designed a modified chart but are having trouble making sure that the same people won't have to play each other in the early rounds.

I can't post it here but:
If you have a design that shows how the 32 man chart is laid out, I would appreciate taking a look at your design. Interested parties can pm me and I will be happy to share my design with them.

Thanks,
JoeyA

You can pick up the PDF files off the APA website. It's called "Modified Single Elimination". It's right here:

http://www.poolplayers.com/materials.html

Also, I recently created an Excel file for a modified 16 team Scotch Doubles tournament that automatically calculates what the race is, who won the match based on the score and automatically fills out the rest of the chart. You can PM me and I'll be happy to send you a copy of the file. If you'd need something like that done for 32 players, I'd do it but for a small price (it takes a while).

I have taken the design from the PDF above and created an excel file out of it. Hope this helps.
I can't upload excel files so I zipped it up. Let me know if you have any problems with it.

Thanks!
This is exactly what I needed. I see they call it a modified single elimination....
Is this forum great or what? :)

Yeah, I'm referring to something I recently did that's completely automated. I only did this for 16 participant modified single elimination but I'd be willing to do it for any format.

I sent you a PM and was also just wondering how long does your Scotch Doubles 16 particpant tournament take to run based on races to 5 or 7.

And pardon the stupid question but is that simply 16 people total or 16 teams of two people (32 players)?
Thanks,
Joey

Yeah, the one I did is for 16 participants (teams or people). I mean, I'll look at the 32-people chart. There's a chance it won't take me long to create (might be a copy/paste and a few formula changes).

What I can do (and I'm thinking about how to template this):

1. Automatically calculate handicaps within the chart
2. Color code winners/losers
3. Autofill chart based on handicap+score

I think I can pretty much get excel to do whatever I want. I think I can even get it to do the draw too, though I think most people would balk at such an idea. BUT, if you have any ideas, let me know and I'll see if I can figure it out.

That would be an interesting setup to see...

I have it on my home pc. Maybe I'll post it here. I do these occasional projects so that I can brainstorm new ideas in Excel. Also, I think such a spreadsheet would make tournament management a billion times easier. I've been trying to figure out a way to efficiently keep track of available tables within the chart but I haven't spent enough time on it to figure out how to formulate it.

Ideally, there would be the tournament chart. Within each match box would be a place to put the score, the table # and the handicap (which I've already done).

However, I would like to also have a place where tables are shown as "in use" or "available" based on what's been given out and whether a score has been reported or not. Ideally, it would be a table-chart also on the same sheet as the tournament chart. I'm close. I just need an hour or so to get it to work

I'm not sure what the other charts look like, but here is a method that ensures no one will play someone twice until the semi-finals.

Play the prelims as four groups of 8. You play until you have two on the winners side and two on the losers side. This will give you 16 players for the single elimination chart. Randomly draw the four from the first group into spots 1,5,9, and 13, with the second group going into 2,6,10 and 14, etc. It's also possible to pre-assign spots, and if you do that, you should make sure that in each first-round match an undefeated player is playing someone with one loss: WA-LD WB-LC LA-WD LB-WC WA-LC WB-LD LA-WC LB-WD for the Ws and Ls from groups A B C D.

With this arrangement, it's possible for all of the final four players to come from the same original group.

If you have byes, make sure they are uniformly distributed into the original four groups of 8.

It's also a good idea to make sure that the first bye is on 1 half of the board, the next 2 byes are on the other half of the board (if needed), and the last bye is on the other half of the board (if needed)(OK, don't want it to sound like 3 halfs, so I'll say the last bye is on same half as the first). And of course they'd all 4 be in different quadrants.

I can't post it here. It's too big. If anyone is interested, please PM me your email address and I'll send it to you directly.
