Pool Commentary

Most everybody in the pool world today may know Allen Hopkins the promoter and ESPN commentator. However, in his heyday, he was, without a doubt, an American pool champion.

Does anybody have a reference of Hopkins' world title championships? I have tried to locate them, but the references are scattered, and it is a time-consuming chore. I have located a few of them:

World Open 14.1 Champion, 1977
US Open Nine-ball Champion, 1977
PPPA World Nine-ball Champion, 1977
PPPA World Nine-ball Champion, 1979
Baltimore Ballet Nine-ball Champion, 1980 -- (LOL) Ballet?
US Open Nine-ball Champion, 1981
River City Nine-ball Champion, 1984
Meucci World Nine-ball Champion, 1987
Japan World Open Champion, 1988
Valley Forge Classic Champion, 1989
Legends of One-pocket Champion, January 1991

I would really like to see a full listing of them. I think it would open some folks' eyes as to how strong Allen Hopkins is as a pool player.

Lest we forget ...

1993 International Champion of Champions

I like Allen Hopkins as well when he's commentating. :)

Why he isn't in the BCA's Hall of Fame is beyond me, not only as a player but in the meritorious capacity as well. However, I don't think Hopkins is losing any sleep over it. He's done quite well in the pool industry due to his hard work and dedication to the sport, and thankfully, Allen Hopkins continues to keep pool alive and well in these United States of America.

Good point. Whoever does the nominations must have some sort of grudge aginst him. Long overdue, IMO.

I'm not sure how the voting goes anymore with the BCA Hall of Fame Committee -- or at least there used to be a committee

One year -- and this was a while back -- I was told that the voting was done over a teleconference call, and the facilitator said, "All in favor, say aye. All opposed, say nay," and thus, the new inductee into the BCA's Hall of Fame was named.

This last time around, from reading this forum, I learned that there were voting members who cast their votes and sent them in. Though none of them knew who voted for who, they were given a tally of the total votes for each nominee.

My personal opinion is that sometimes there exists professional jealousy in some pool circles. Allen Hopkins, being the promoter of many events, could be competition for some industry members, and as we all know, the BCA consists of industry members. JMHO, FWIW!

I don't think Allen Hopkins worries about being overlooked for the BCA's Hall of Fame, especially considering the Billiard Congress of AMERICA in recent times seems to pull farther and farther away from pool's survival in these United States of America. Again, JMHO, FWIW!

One of my favorite commentators is that English guy Wendall. A few years ago, he and Jerry Forsyth were co-commentators at the WPC, and it captured my interest, was entertaining.

I remember that. Forsyth and that English guy were a great pair. Forsyth is one of the best IMO. I also like Steve Davis's commentary during WPC. Southern drawl paired with British accent is a good combination, especially when both really know what they're talking about.

One of my favorite all time was Gabe Owen and Aaron Czetli (sp) during the IPT. I think a few people here were offended by some of the jokes, but it was really funny and entertaining and at the same time very knowledgeable. It kind of reminded me of some of the sportscenter announcers in that way. Get those guys back in the booth.

The BBC commentators were all at the top of the game - UK & World Champions

Steve Davis
John Parrott
Dennis Taylor
John Virgo
plus
Clive Everton - Editor of a snooker magazine

When discussing shots they mark where they think the shot will go, then you watch the player's shot take the same route.

When Billy Incardona is commentating pool he uses a recurring phrase "I didn't think he could do that". Jim Wych is more knowledgeable, but that is to be expected, he was a top snooker player

Few issues i have here. firstly, i would say billy has just as much knowledge as jim, many times listening to wych i have been suprised at ceetain things he hasn't known/failed to point out. secondly, what is it with people assuming that snooker players are higher up the stairway to heaven than pool players?? why should he be more knowledgeable?

also i would say both wych and billy arent the best at articulating their points to be honest, however incardona comes across as a bit more endearing and i like him.

also on the subject of the snooker commentators - the grass is always greener on the other side. well maybe not from the other perspective, they look down on pool but anyways, the snooker commentators take a hell of a lot of stick from the snooker community. virgo and taylor especially. although the only one i don't like is clive everton, who increasingly divides opinion. some people think he's the greatest, i think he's a bit snobby and doesn't add much. he says the simplest of things but tries to make them sound so profound. which they arent.

also steve davis and john parrott very rarely commentate during your main tournaments, they do the studio punditry.

willie thorne is the best, he practically reinvented commentary and pioneered the style where he explains all the inns and outs of tactical play and break building, shot selection etc. you learn more listening to thorne in one frame than you would from listening to everton for 10 championships!

I like hearing the pool players do commentary.

One of my favorite commentators is that English guy Wendall. A few years ago, he and Jerry Forsyth were co-commentators at the WPC, and it captured my interest, was entertaining.

My boyfriend, who plays pool professionally, but doesn't like watching it on TV, watched the WPC that year.

It was because of the energy and excitement that you could hear in their voices. Wendall with his blue-blooded English accent and his animated style of commentary, along with Jerry's knowledge of the game and the American players AND especially his Southern drawl, they were an EXCELLENT duo.

JAM,

I think you mean Sid Waddell. I wish more Americans could be treated to his style of commentary. He's primarily a darts announcer, but he does a good job with pool and soccer as well. Sid with Steve Davis is a fantastic combination, IMHO.

Here are a few of Sid's more famous quotes:

"That's the greatest comeback since Lazarus."
"He's about as predictable as a wasp on speed."
"The players are under so much duress, it's like Duressic Park!"
"Keith Deller's not just an underdog, he's an underpuppy!"
"Even Hypotenuse would have trouble working out these angles."
"If you had to throw a knife at your wife in the circus, you'd want to throw it like that."
"It's like trying to pin down a kangaroo on a trampoline."
"Well as giraffes say, you don't get no leaves unless you stick your neck
out."
"He looks about as happy as a penguin in a microwave."
"That's like giving Dracula the keys to the blood bank."
"I get the same effect when I see Steve Davis, I just see two letters... C
& S... Cue Sorceror"

I couldn't agree more JAM. I think you'r referring to Sid Waddell (who I refer to, BTW, as the "Dick Vitale" of Pool!) Just his enthusiasm for the game gives me goose bumps. I have semi-finals & finals tapes I bought on Ebay (shhhhh!) for 2000, 2001, 2002 and I love these tapes. I actually like all the announcers on those and they do include Kim Davenport (I agree his grammar isn't the best but he does give insightful comments IMHO. Also Jerry F. is great and I even like Jim White (who most on this forum dismiss rudely).

Those who haven't heard Sid Waddel.......you're missing out:D

Well. first, they are, and, second, it would be no fun pointing it out if you didn't take the bait.:D :D :D

LMAO i read JAM's post and thought, bless her, she's dreamt up some english bloke called Wendall who doesn't exist! wasn't gonna say anything though! :p

seriously though, waddell is fantastic, he's extremely popular here in england.

Well. first, they are, and, second, it would be no fun pointing it out if you didn't take the bait.

Oi! no they are not, and second, it's not funny to wind people up about something they are really passionate about! :D
