Pool Cue Case Info.......

Wondering what types of things I should look for when ordering a custom cue case. I have only used 2x4 Porper cases and they have done the job nicely.

But I feel that it is time to upgrade to a nice case. I am looking at getting a 3x6 Whitten case and I want to know what to look for in a case.

Any thoughts, ideas, or recomendations would be appreciated.

My suggestion is to describe to another person in as much detail as possible why you want to upgrade. This should tell you what you want in a case. If you don't like that idea, try writing it down. I do this to clear my mind sometimes before making a big decision and it works pretty well.
 
Weight

Consider Weight When Going From A Porper To A Whitten. I Did The Same Thing And It Was To Heavy For Me In What I Intended To Use It For. Big Difference In The To. One Extreme To Another. Imo. Pm Me And I Will Explain To Ya. Good Luck
 
IMO, you should make sure your case will have a pouch that's deep enough to carry your own cue ball without stretching the zipper. No sense playing with a worn-down out-of-round blue-stained junk ball if you don't have to.
 
Something that I noticed in the for sale section a while ago.

Make sure the case length will accommodate your cues. If they are longer than standard and/or you use jp's it will surely have an impact.

Good luck with your choice. I've been looking at the Whittens too.

I've owned Whitten 3x6 cases and I currently have a Whitten 2x4 case, an It's George 2x4, and a Porper 2x4 case and if you are considering going from the Porper 2x4 to a Whitten 3x6 prepare yourself for a huge weight increase. Naturally the Whitten will have the best leather and look great, but for me it just wasn't practical to carry a case that heavy. If you have a strong back you may not give the extra weight a second thought, but I have back trouble and it bothered me. I hope this gives you one thing to consider about a new case. I think Whitten cases are great cases and I still have a very nice 2x4, but I only store cues in it and I use my lighter Porper case when I go to play pool.

To get a light case, a Jack Justis Ultralite comes to mind. I haven't lifted his 3x6, but his 2x4 is really light.
 
IMO, your primary concern should be cue protection.

If I were to go for fully-customized case with good protection, I'd go for John Barton Cases

Should you go for the heavier tubed cases, I suggest that you get a ball bearing wheel like that in Murnak's so that you can use the case like a stroller:

Get in touch with Jim Murnak. Tell him what you want in a case and he will make it for you. I just got a 3x6 from his Vintage line and I love it.
 
I have a Porper and what I don't like is that the cues cannot be inserted butt down. You cannot move to another area with the cues in the case.

Back straps are a must have. Makes the case easier to carry. You can also put the case on your back with cues still assembled to move around an area and even for a lav break without taking them apart. Just be careful of door ways.

Being able to insert the cue down butt first also allows the case to be used as a cue holder.

Make sure that there is enough head room for joint protectors.
 
A Porper is a fine Case, but a Whitten is like the difference between a Yugo, and a Buick. I would talk at length to Joe Whitten before ordering your Case. As Joe can do many custom thing to make your Whitten a one of a kind Case.
 
Just got back from a tournament...........2nd place!!!!

Thanks to all for the great info. Here are my thoughts / responses to them, in no particular order:

Weight - I looked very closely at Corey Harpers 3x6 Whitten. I really like the quality and the weight will not be an issue to me.

Length - I spoke with Ariel Carmeli who is making me a cutsom cue and the shafts / butt will fit in the standard length case with the JP's on. 30.5" and the case will fit 30.75"

Murnak - I sent Jim a PM and never heard back. Maybe he never got it??

Lastly, I spoke with Joe today and sent him a deposit. He is going to send me material samples. I am going to get the smooth black leather with Royal Blue trim on the top and bottom. I may add Royal Blue diaonds on the pouches.

You're probably right, and if I were serious about his case, I would have tried different methods of contact. I really liked the Whitten case and just pursued that one.

Those look like very nice cases, super quality !! I have already ordered mine from Whitten. I will post up some pics when I get it.
